I bought it straight from Moolloon. You can just email them.They probably sell the J 5 the most and then I'd imagine the 4 string P. They also have a 5 string called a Modern B24 that is very cool and unique. It is all passive, which I love. Most boutique builders focus on active basses, but there is so much tone to a well built passive bass that I'll address below.:
As you can probably hear in this video, the tone control is very bright when it's maxed. It's tough to hear the low end, but at least you get the idea.
One thing I really love about my J 5 is that the tone knob is a lot more musical than any other J I have owned. What I mean is that I usually play with the tone knob about 75% up on this bass. At 100% and with a pick and some overdrive, it sounds absolutely incredible. Very bright while still retaining a lot of mids and lows. If you solo the bridge pickup on many jazz basses, the pickup many times sounds thin and loses low end. On this bass, the bridge pickup is a very usable tone on it's own. Still thick in the lows. Additionally, when you drop the tone all the way down, it is not all thump - there is still clarity, so you can roll the tone all the way off and still have a very usable tone for a lot of situations. This is the only J I have owned where there are a ton of options that really will work in a mix. And then more time I spend with it, the faster I can find what I need for each tune.
It really is amazing and is probably why people value those old Pre CBS J's. If you are demoing a roadworn or a relic style bass, make sure and solo that bridge and see if you still have lows on it. That is a really good test to see how legit the tone is. I thought my Fender Roadworn J was decent at replicating the tone, but the bridge pickup soloed on it simply was way too small to be usable compared to the Moollon. I can probably make a demo of the tones if anyone is interested.
Wow, I'm liking what I hear from and about Moolon! Any samples or demos you can put out, I'd love to hear! I'm currently in the waiting list for a Reiner 1200 amp, otherwise I might plunk down for a Classic J5 now.

Yeah, no longer. I like Lakland a lot but there was certain things I was looking for tonally and Moollon nailed it.
That's cool. I just remember you saying in the past you were sponsored. Nice bass BTW.
Unfortunately, I don't know much about those. Not sure if they are made in house or not. The pickups are though.

Well after all this time it's finally arrived. My new J-IV bass. It's beautiful I haven't had time to play around with it yet because I got home so late from work but it looks great and so does the case.
I like the red color it's slightly metallic and wanted the tortoise pick guard instead of a white one. Together they are very rich. The whole thing oozes class and quality, including the case. They did claim $399 value on the declaration so I didn't have to pay customs which I'm happy about. Who was it on this sight that claimed it was a bad sign. It's beautiful and it feels great.
Awesome bass man. I forgot you already have a 5 too! Yeah they claim them $399. But anybody who has bought from an overseas builder should know that can happen and understands it, so I'm not sure why it would be a bad sign either. Moollon is making pro basses for working players so they are just trying to save them some $ on the backend. Usually people who make those comments have no experience in what they are commenting on.
I got it from a teacher but I am still a recent beginner so I decided i should have a 4 string and I love the feel and quality of Moollon so I felt ordering one is the best option. Someone on here tried to claim that no reputable company would claim the customs lower. Obviously, they never had one or they wouldn't make that claim. I am glad that they put that amount also because it was shipped to my office and they all read the label so i wouldn't want them to know the real $ amount. I'm looking forward to plugging it in today. Hope you're enjoying yours!
Oh yeah, I am loving mine. I am getting the neck checked on this week after my setup just to make sure there is no movement. This is made just like a PreCBS, so you have to take off the neck to tweak the rod.
I'd suggest taking it in for a pro setup because when these basses travel that far, the neck usually warps a little. I'd also suggest Fodera nickel strings. They are so freaking good on the Moollon, I can't believe it. There was something about DR Sunbeams that I was not completely happy with, and the Foderas filled the void.

The tuners are proprietary and built in house if I'm not mistaken. Would love to play a Moollon someday. I've only heard great things and love Fender style basses.
Yeah I'm a little unsure if he built the tuners and then has a company make them in bulk or how that works. Regardless they are very precise.
