NBD - Another Cheap Jazz - Am I Crazy ??

Nothing crazy bout it! If it sings for you, then it sings for you. Price is secondary.

I've got a 2008 MIM P that I totally tricked out. Babicz bridge, Gotoh resolite tuners, EMG Geezer pups plus stainless frets. Spent a ton on her to get her where she is now. Plays like butter and every one of my friends who try her out sing her praises.
Then I stumbled upon a bone stock 80's Yamaha PB400 for 1/3 the price of the MIM P. The price was too good to pass up so I bought it. Really came alive after I strung it up with LaBella Flats. It has replaced the Fender P as my main player.

FYI- Phillip McKnight ("Know Your Gear" YouTube Channel) did a great little piece on how less expensive instruments (including Squiers) either hold or don't lose much value despite the reputation of budget imports for losing a lot of their of original value after having been used.



Main reason to buy is because you dig the instrument, but value and resale is still good to take into consideration. A lot of times you can sell Squiers for close to what you have invested in them. That's really cool.

Thanks for all the input. I spent a little more time with my Fender jazz today and I think it's the coating on the neck that's getting me. It's like my fingers get stuck on it and it doesn't slide as easy as the satin finish on the other basses I have. I love the feel/playability of these Squiers and the Ibanez basses that I have, but my Fender and P bass get the last amount of play. It just hit me that those have the gloss necks while the others that I play a lot have the satin finish. What's the best way about removing the finish from the neck to get it to a satin finish, or just take it to a shop?

Take a scotch brite green pad and make a few passes across the back of the neck. It will take all of five mins. Make even passes and test it every four of five passes. Evenly scuff up the neck so you it's consistent and you will be good to go.

Before I saw this bass, I had 5 with a deal for two more in the works. This bass makes 8 now...

current basses are
Silvertone Precision - standard tuning with EB Slinkys
Fender MIM Jazz - standard tuning with Fender Tapewounds
Squier Affinity Jazz -standard tuning with EB Slinkys
Ibanez SR300 - standard tuning with DR Neons
Ibanez SRX300 - BEAD with EB Power Slinkys

the new basses coming from a fellow TB'er are
Squier VM 70's Jazz - planned to go standard with Fender Flatwound
Fender MIM Jazz - planning on going BEAD with EB Power Slinkys

and the new one..
Squier Affinity Jazz -standard tuning with Fender 7250ML

As I stated, I really like the Affinity Jazz basses (more than other Squier or Fender), but I did want more time with the other basses and figured if I didn't love them, I could always resell.
Any opinions on what to do where with the two Squier duplicates? I really didn't need it (obviously), but I love the color...keep it standard or go BEAD on this one as well? I initially thought BEAD, but I'm kinda thinking just go standard and have a nice matching set ( @dabbler you understand !!)
