I just heard back from Steve. He uses Dunlop flats on his. I can try out a set of those pretty cheap with my SBL member discount. Might be worth a test.

I just got a fretless built in 2013 and the strings are TI flats - It had been there since 2013. They still sound bright. I think I am going to keep them there. 16 bucks a year for strings at this rate. Rounds are not an issue. I used stainless steel Roto 66 for years on my old fretless - 30 years and just recently put flats. Will be back to rounds if I play it again.
