Does anyone know when this stopped?....i have a 2006 and its def not veneered

I'm fairly certain it was stopped by 2000. Fender revised the American Standard in 1995 and I know it was happening with that revision forward for a few years. I think it continued at least until 1999? The bursts had the veneer tops but the easiest finish to see it on is Sunburst. If the tummy contour is "black" in color, then it has a veneer top. Solid colors didn't have a veneer, since the grain was irrelevant for the finish.

It has the transparent finish throughout the middle if the body then 'bursts' into a solid pearl looking blue on the edges,

I think 1997 was the last year. 1998 was when the body wood was changed to ash, instead of alder with an ash veneer. I know this is true for the deluxe jazz bass, not sure about the p bass though.

Can you tell me a little about the tone? I love my P/Js but this is a whole different beast. Does the bridge pup do a decent Music Man impression?

It has its own unique voice in my experience. I'm a huge Musicman fan, and have owned Stingrays and Sterlings both, but I'd say they have a more midrangey tone than this bass. I haven't gotten to really fiddle with this bass much though, so take my opinion with a grain of salt lol
