The original Dan Armstrong did have a plastic laminate pickguard made from the Formica company range of plastic laminate, the name was Rosewood. It was discontinued in the 1970's. The reason I know this is I was at a Guitar Show (I think it was 1996) and at the Vintage Guitar magazine booth I was talking about my Dan Armstrong bass, the guy at the counter gave me the home phone number of Dan Armstrong and said he loves to here from owners of his basses. I called Dan and since by bass didn't have the original pickguard I asked him what was the plastic pickguard material and he gave me the specification. He was such a nice guy.

I love the look of these and can certainly see one in my future! I shall look out for your updates with interest. Glad to hear it's nicely put together. I'll be taking the LED route though! Enjoy!

I've seen most with blue LED's, but have also come across others, from time to time, that have multi-colored LED's. Typically, you can choose to turn them on or off.

The pick guard on these basses broke alot, they were unreinforced from behind. I was able to buy an original Dan Armstrong pick guard on E Bay but it was for the guitar version (not the bass). On the guitar there is a little cut out at the pickup. I was able to get a sheet of Rosewood laminate. All I needed a very small piece. So my luthier filled it in with a piece from the sheet. See sheet attached, my bass and the sheet. My bass had the jack plunging in from the back of the bass (someone's fix for the jack). This was filled with a dowel of acrylic.

Out of interest, the only time I've ever seen one played was by Barry Devlin of Irish rockers Horslips. It looked and sounded great. It was an actual Dan Armstrong of course! Cracking set as well.

When I have it sitting on a stand in front of all of my other basses, it is funny because the body sort of disappears because it's clear. Makes me think of the Predator movies, when
it has it's high tech camouflage shielding engaged.
According to a video on YouTube by one of our very own TB'ers (his handle escapes me at the moment), Geezer Butler played one with Black Sabbath, for a little bit! I was happily surprised, given that he was my main influence for starting to learn bass. I had never heard, or seen him playing a Dan Armstrong. So now, I'm cool, like Geezer.
No clue! Have not got it yet. I believe the original 4005 were 33.75". So if the Chinese copied it, probably will be that or standard 34". It doesn't look short scale in the photo. So we'll see!
I want to find a used one of these.. and put a fender neck.. and better pickup and bridge on it..

This Dan Armstrong Bass in the photo is not of the original 1969-70's run of Dan Armstrong Basses. It is a reissue made (as I recall) in Korea. The give away is the recess in the acrylic at the top of the pick up. The reissue bass had this, the 1969-70's bass didn't. In the original, the guitar version had this recess to slide the pick up out but it was not found on the bass version. PS: I was able to obtain a Korean pickguard and the screw holes do not align with the holes in an original body.Out of interest, the only time I've ever seen one played was by Barry Devlin of Irish rockers Horslips.
