Go through the electronics. You have signal. Replace the pots, cap, jack, and associated wiring. Hum is usually caused by bad grounds, poor shielding, or 60 Hz hum from the single coil J pickup. The P pickup should be humbucking.

Next, check the neck relief. See if the truss rod can be adjusted to factory specs. If so, see if the action can be set to decent playability. The neck looks much better than the body; you may have a shot.

Only if all else is done, then address the body cosmetics.

Oh, she's on her way. That was a joke.

I adjusted neck relief, action and intonation. I started sanding the body earlier today. Doesn't look like I'll be able to do a natural finish due to too many gouges (someone carved letters into it pretty deep) so I am looking at paint now...

Update! As mentioned, the gouges were too deep to do a natural finish. I got tired of it being in pieces so I slopped some paint on it and started putting it back together. I'm waiting for the pots and pickup selector to come in the mail for the electronics to be up and running but here she is in her current not-quite-as-crusty state

The output jack is loose and takes some fiddling to work. None of the pots seem to do anything but it doesn't sound half bad. I only played with it a couple of minutes though.

Any ideas on year and model?

It's a Tremor, if it's passive I'd say a standard, but mine (my first bass) was a J/MM arrangement. They may have done them in P/J before about '98. My Tremor was a surprisingly well-made bass for the price, but the pickups kinda sucked. I went full 'Flea' with a Lane Poor MM pickup and an Aguilar 2-band preamp (disabling the J pickup and relegating it to thumb rest duty), and it was a GREAT bass, best import I've ever owned by a lot, and that includes Japanese Fenders.

Can you tell what wood the body's made of, maybe by looking in the control cavity? I'd definitely strip that monkey and refinish it, it'd be cool if the body wood was decent enough looking to be able to just oil finish it. If the pots suck and you're not crazy about the pickups, check out EMG's P/J sets, they come with good quality pots and solderless connectors, quick and easy. The GZR (Geezer Butler signature) set is my favorite P-bass pickup ever with a well-matched humbucking J pickup and vol-vol-tone pots and a jack, sounds fan-damn-tabulous and takes like 10 minutes to install.

Cool bass! I miss mine.

Edit: Oops, shoulda read the whole thread, haha! Looks good, hope you get a lot of miles out of it.
