Wow Mike must really like you. When I asked him a few years ago about a custom Kompact he blew me off without even pausing and pretending to consider it! Beautiful looking bass I'm sure is gonna be just awesome. Great builder and a great person.
That’s funny! I had Mike make me a 5 string kompact years ago. He wouldn’t budge on extending the scale and making it a 6 with a low B. I eventually sold that bass as I really wanted a 6. I stayed in touch and eventually he said he was making someone a 6 in 32” scale. I ordered one, really love this bass but at the time couldn’t get him to add in a magnetic pickup. Then chatting with Dave he said he had plans to do magnetic.

Just found this thread after seeing Mike post pictures on Facebook. Looks unbelievable. To Mike’s credit he won’t do something unless he knows he’s ready to nail it 100%.

I have been lurking on BassTalk for years, but I never had a reason to comment...until now. I am already a huge Kinal Kompact fan. "Blondie" is my favorite go-to bass since I bought her in 2006. THIS one however is over-the-top fantastic. Every decision you and Mike made was like divine inspiration. I actually had an emotional reaction when I saw the first picture of the finished back. I have never had that happen before...ever...wow, wow, wow.

Thanks for your input. Mike said he would build another if asked...I’m going to have to give it a name...”Dave Vergato Signature Kompact Bass”. While it’s not as versatile a sound as my other Kinal basses, it is very unique and sounds great in the right application.

what applications would that include?
It sounded great in a jazz trio, and on some Beatles songs...it’s very similar in tone to a Hofner, but it’s a bit tighter/punchier. It’s very even sounding across the entire register and has a great tone, so it could really be played in just about any setting. It’s a great instrument.
