the trifecta! Now I have a bass that looks great, is comfortable to play, and sounds amazing.
you made some great/astute modifications to make the beast play better for you, and that's super all by itself! great save on a great looking ax --- and congratulations on your new instrument! Deal of the decade. Damn.I just scored a JC in white at my local guitar shop for... wait for it... $350! I'm planning on doing the same bridge/tuner replacement. Stoked!

maybe I need to swap the pickups?
I believe it's hollow under the pup. Probably easier access.I don't own one. Too big for my liking. The sound intrigues me greatly. I applaud the OP for figuring out how to fit a block in the upper horn via an f hole to secure a strap button. For others considering this - is there any way to get a larger access way by pulling the PUP? Maybe it's screwed down to a centre block, I don't know.
Yeah. I have one of those. I upgraded the bridge and tuners, but it doesn't sound the same. Maybe its that its chambered and not semi-hollow, or maybe I need to swap the pickups?
black tapewounds
Think of the "choke" switch on a Hofner, with three options instead of two.I'm intrigued by the impedance switch...
Sounds so good I'd never consider anything else.Oooh....how does that sound? I personally have Rotosound flat Monels on mine.
I have no personal experience with tapewounds. I've been making a fretless Partscaster and have tapewounds for it.Sounds so good I'd never consider anything else.
Those are Magnum, but my new one is getting GHS black tapewounds.
This is what I had on mine. Magical!Great bass. I have the same one. It’s a fun bass to play. No mods though and with La Bella LTF strings.
No! The pickup with the impedance switch is where the magic happens. I too changed the bridge to Hipshot (don't like the Gibby 3-point) and added Grover tuners...and a Tusq nut.
