NBD - ESP LTD B-1005MS a NG2 alternative?

I owned one of these and found it very uncomfortable to play down by the first fret; the nut would dig into my hand and it hurt. This thread is making me wish I had tried a little harder to make it work because I really did like how it sounded. Maybe I can track another down and give it another shot.

I filed the bottom of the nut with a Dremel which was a pretty easy fix. Just rounded it off a little bit being careful not to nick the fretboard. Looks a little weird up close but feels great now!

That's a solution!
As I mentioned the Ibanez EHB1506MS has that very same problem. The nut is razorshape and pointy at the C string. And didn't you know...the new EHB series 1005-SMS as a rounded nut.

Yeah, they have 5 string length pickups but since they're slanted for the multiscale, they don't fully cover the B and G strings. You need to have 6 string spacing for full coverage. A lot of buzz on this thread about it Spector NS Dimension
In contrast, that brings us back to the b1005ms, which has perfectly matching pole pieces to the string spacing
Thank you for that link. That's a shame and a very idiotic mistake.

I had one of these, great sounding bass and very responsive to different fingering positions and styles. Ultimately it was too heavy for me. I eventually sold it to help finance a D-Roc standard. They can be a little tough to find a case for since they are so long, I have a Music Area gig bag that fit mine but I don't think they're making it any more. If I had kept it I would have had the nut filed down a little, the lower corner really dug into my finger when I was playing on the first two frets.

I will say that I wasn't thrilled with the pickups in my Combustion, I ended up replacing them with Lace Alumitones which I like a lot more.

Enjoy the bass!

Do you have any regrets now that's it's been a while on not keeping the ESP? I had a droc and hated the sound of it stock. I tossed in an audere pre and it helped a ton but it definitely needed a pickup swap if I had kept it. The boat I'm in now is that I don't see the value of the import dingwall equaling the price tags. Used Drocs are about the only thing reasonable. IMO the NGs just aren't cutting it. I'm no stranger to swapping pickups and pres either. My favorite pickup/preamp combo in my EHB was big splits with a darkglass tone capsule. The ESP gets me 90% of the way to what I want. Hoping to luck out and find one around 9.5lbs and swap in a tone capsule or one of the many preamps I have laying around.

Honestly, I do wish I had kept it. I think a neoprene strap would have helped a lot and it really was probably the best sounding bass I've owned. Certainly the best sounding stock bass. And considering I still haven't managed to get that D-Roc...

Yeah, the imports have really gone up in price. They're great basses and all but they're not too much less than a Canadian model now. I remember when the Afterburners came out and the same thing happened.

Personally I'm looking at the BTB multiscale right now if I can make the money happen.

Yeah I played an EHB with the t1 pickups in them and I like them a lot better than the BH2s. The btbs are also very heavy. I think I'm just going to pull the trigger on the ESP.

I will participate with this LTD/Ibanez hijacking of a Dingwall thread!

Not much difference in weight between my BTB605ms and LTD B-1005 but the balance is very different. The LTD is a neck diver for sure whereas BTB is very well balanced. I just wear a strap when I play it and that helps. Just a heads up though in case neck dive is a big deal to you.

Yes, Ibanez did a really nice job with the T1 pickups. There is nothing to really complain about with them. Both these basses sound excellent. the Ibanez has a flatter and fuller spectrum. The LTD has more highs and has a more pre-sculpted, aggressive tone.

Thanks for the heads up, I use wide Franklin straps so neck dive hasn't been an issue for me yet. I'm actually looking more towards the 4 string so maybe it'll balance a little better. I also put ultra lights on everything, thinking resolite for this one though so that might help some too. I really like the BTB blue color but between big splits and T1s I prefer the Splits. I'm going to have the body refinished on the ltd in a white or light color as well, leaving the neck alone
