NBD: Fano PX4

After long thought and deliberation I decided to pull the trigger on a new Fano PX4. I have been eyeballing one of these for months now. I was a bit nervous at first because I paid a lot more than I have ever paid for a bass. This is also my first relic'ed bass I have ever bought.

This guy sounds like a monster with the Lollar thunderbird pickups. It has extremely flexible tone with the blend and tone knobs. The neck is so smooth and at a 32" scale and 1.5 nut, I can just glide across the frets. The distressing is done really well. There is some great deep checking that will not show up in the pictures. The craftsmanship is truly top notch. My favorite thing is that the color on the back is the solid amber color from the center of the burst. The paint job line between the black and orange is perfect.

I actually like it better than its inspiration source (late 60's non-reverse T-bird) - super cool. I've always like the Fano basses I've seen, and this one looks awesome. Consider it money well spent.

I have been considering a Tort. I have contacted Spitfire to see if he is interested in making them for me. I figured it would not cost more or maybe even less than buying directly from Fano. Then I know it will look perfect. I also really like the white on there for now. The only thing is that it is not relic'ed like the rest of the bass.

Congrats on the new bass! I've heard nothing but good things about the entire Fano lineup. I'd keep the white PG, or maybe black. Tort would be like slapping a new vinyl top on an old, naturally relic'd Cadillac.

I like the matt black idea here. All of my basses with back covers are black and do not match the PG. Thanks!

I am not a relic fan, but Fano's guitars are finished incredibly well and look awesome. I have never played one of his basses but I have tried a few of his guitars and they truly feel like they are 50 years old. Amazing stuff.

I've recently become interested in these as my interest has increase in short scale basses in general. You hardly see any of these around any more on the dealer website's though it appears to still be on Fano's site.
