So, I took the plunge and ordered a Harley Benton PB Shorty from Thomann.
Not just a new bass, but my first bass. I've never even touched a bass apart from a couple of times jamming about 20 years ago.
Maybe not impressive, but I went for this model after a ton of research, not least on Talkbass (thanks all). Part of the thinking was that my first bass is unlikely to be my last, so if this is going to be the 'other' bass it may as well be small, light and cheap.
So far it seems OK, other than being a bit rough to the touch in a couple of places on the headstock.
Next steps: 1 change strings, 2 shield (buzzes a bit until you touch the strings), and 3 set-up. The pickguard might get some attention – I'm not a massive fan of white on black (YMMV). That'll have to be DIY as you can't get OEM or after-market replacements as far as I can tell.
Oh yeah – 4 learn to play!
