I'm so excited about this bass. I bought from Sweetwater on Saturday. I received it on Wednesday, opened it up on Thursday and fell in love with it by Friday. This morning I took some photos.
I've been browsing jazz basses for about a year now. I was very impressed with the Vintera line that I've played in just about every GC I've been in. I was torn between the 60s and 70s with each one having something I liked and something I didn't. I considered buying American for prestige and nationalism but Ive been hung up on the finish and the whole look of the instrument that I wanted.
With stores closed due to the virus, I started looking at Sweetwater to see the basses. The pictures of the actual bass they are selling is a brilliant idea.I wasn't looking for a Sunburst finish jazz and it was actually the one finish that I just didn't find very appealing. I wanted something a little different but not something I would tire of. They have a picture up of a G&L JB in Vintage white with Caribbean rosewood which I liked a lot but it was not of the bass they were selling. I think they may have had a blemished one but I didn't find it pulling me.
I also am a fan of a Fender Jazz with the white binding and block inlays and I knew the Vintera 70s were made that way and I didn't need to spend 2k to get one NEW. But I really couldn't find one with a dark enough fretboard for my taste. I think the Pau Ferro is a nice finger board to match with certain colors but not as an overall replacement for the Indian rosewood look. YMMV. So when I saw these pics on the website and knowing the bass from actually playing it in the stores, I jumped on this one. I had buyers remorse immediately and as I said in the opening of the thread, I didn't even open it up when it came in. I was afraid I ordered a bass that I didn't like the look of. What? Well, yes. I fell in love with this bass for its fretboard. Its dark. I looks like Caribbean rosewood to me. I just love it. But it's Sunburst. Blah. Where is the excitement in that? Well. Im a changed man today. I will admit, I am shopping for a Tort pickguard to replace the black but thats not my immediate concern. I'm just happy to report that this Jazz bass floats my boat.
In every way, this bass rocks. The tone is 'Exactly' what I was hoping for. The weight is 9lbs. Very comfortable neck and the set up is spot on. I am definitely happy with it and my gas has subsided. Here are some pics for everyone to enjoy. I think you'll mostly see how dark the fretboard is and how much it looks like rosewood. Thanks for reading.
