NBD! Fender Aerodyne Jazz

The Aerodynes are pretty amazing basses. While remaining firmly rooted in the Fender sound and vibe, they still manage to get their own thing going. Which is pretty cool.

I keep flirting with the notion I absolutely “need” to get one of their MIJ “not for export” Aero JBs. Preferably in Gunmetal, although I find the Dolphin Grey finish also very attractive.

So many cool basses. So little time. :)

Not to worry - I baby all my basses. :)

The pickguard version is nice, for sure, but I like the distinctive look of this one even more.

The Gunmetal and Dolphin Grey are admittedly very nice indeed, almost (but not quite) nice enough for me to forgo the black. ;)

It’s a thing of beauty, and light as a feather. I’ve never been particularily concerned with weight before, but it does make a noticable difference, to the point where I actually notice a slight tendency to neck dive. Since I use 4" suede-backed straps, I wouldn’t really call it a problem. Fit and finish is superb, and the bass was well set up from the factory - I only had to tune it, and I was up and running.

I’ve gathered that some don’t like the pickups, but they sounded pretty good to me, so I’m not going to change them anytime soon. The only thing that puzzled me a bit was the fretboard, which is listed in the specs as stained rosewood, but which looks like plain old unstained rosewood to me. No biggie, as I’ve heard that the stain fades over time, and the unstained rosewood does look very nice. I’d been a bit concerned over the lack of fretmarkers, but it turns out to be a non-issue.

All in all, very pleased so far. :hyper::bassist:

I'm assuming that it DOES have the side dots though, is that correct? No markers on the fretboard itself doesn't bother me in the least. But I do like to have side dots.

I've never played an Aerodyne, but always thought they looked very cool. Congrats!!

This is so damn beautiful, I'm thinking of getting one. I would want the version with fretboard inlays and pickguard. But, I don't know if that's japan markets only since they don't sell it in europe anywhere.(used obviously)

About the neck dive...that's a bit worrying, does it happen with normal strap?

No - just felt a bit less balanced when I put the strap on for the first time. It felt fine after that.

I could - but as the bass balances well enough on a strap, I’m happy with it as is. Besides, the tuners on this baby are actually some of the best I’ve ever come across, including the ultralights on my American Standard Fender and the Schallers on my Musicman Sabre, so they’re definitely staying on.
