NBD Fender FSR Deluxe Precision (PJ)

It's an accident! I didn't wanted to buy a bass yesterday...but...

After a few years playing on jazz basses (love the thin neck), I realized that I really prefer the P tone in a band setting. I'm also more confortable standing and playing with a P body shape.

Yesterday, at Quebec City's Long and McQuade, a MIM PJ with a jazz neck caugh my eyes. I ask the saleman to plug it into a small amp so I can play it. It play and sound absolutely perfect! Nice P sound, no apparent dead spot, medium-light weight, passive, hi-mass fender bridge...

And the more important : perfect thin and smooth neck (same neck I've seen on Geddy Lee or American Deluxe J models).

The J pickup is a little bit thin sounding, but the P pickup sound really great.

Life is good! Now I need to add a strings set that I like (not crazy about Fender's string...)

I have the Fender Deluxe P/J in the Seafoam Pearl, and I like it a lot. Like you said, the stock P pickup sounds great. I love the P-Bass sound; I love passive Fenders; and I love Jazz necks, so this was a no-brainer for me.

This is more or less the same price with the money change rate USD-CND...! Canadian dollar is actually weak...

But yes, this is the same bass, except the color.

Use it as a P first. Add in the J if you want to change it up a little, but you have a P bass with options, not a Jazz.

Hi Jeff - The Aguilars are stronger sounding for sure…. Honestly I don't notice the night and day difference I expected. This is a very good Bass for the price…. Another MIM success G

Thanks George. I bought the Seafoam Pearl version a year ago, and just pulled the plug on the newly-added Olympic White one. (Yeah, I'm sick!) I have a set of the Aggie P/J's, but haven't installed them yet. I think the stock pups sound great. At least the Precision pickup. The Jazz is a bit weak, but I always favor the P-pickup anyway. But since I got the White one, I guess I'll go ahead and try the Aggies. My biggest concern was hoping that I don't LOSE anything compared to the stock tone.

From my limited experience with the Stock and Aguilar pups, I don't think you'll feel you've lost anything …. Enjoy them basses my friend

Do you think I can replace the J pickup of my new bass with a Lindy Fralin? Will it sound good with the P pickup? Is there anything about phase or impedance that can make it sound bad?

I recommend that you find a reputable Luthier / Guitar Tech in your area and ask him/her these questions. A smart tech will give you a solid authoritative answer. Wish I could be of more help directly. Good Luck and Have fun.
