NBD - Fender Standard Jazz Bass

Been lurking for a while and bought this a couple weeks ago from a guy online. Long story short, have always been a big music fan, turned forty, and with no real background other than loving music, bought this. MIM Standard Jazz in Midnight Wine.

You might recognize my copy of Rocksmith in the image, also out of frame is my Hal Leonard Bass Method book that I cracked open for the first time yesterday. So far, pretty good at plucking the open E, an F, and a G (so long as it's on the E string).

But hey, I was able to restring it and play for a couple hours for my first time ever. :hyper:

Glad to be part of the club.

Congrats! Do you know anybody that plays guitar or drums? The best way to accelerate your learning is to play with others. The best room to be in is the one where you are the worst player. If you can do that, you can be gigging in a year.

Thanks everyone. I'm really excited about this new hobby and you should've seen me after changing my strings and getting it tuned up. All by myself. *struts*

I would look for a teacher locally but will be moving shortly and in the interest of keeping this short, don't know where I'll exactly be in a couple months. I was hesitant to even buy the thing; I'm trying to get rid of stuff not picking up new gear.

Anyway, once the dust settles I aim to ramp it up but in the mean time will be slow and patient with my books and learning the basics. Might also lurk less and participate more. ;)

This is very true. I'm 20 and suck at jazz playing, so I guess I'm going to go to some jam sessions were all the 30-40 yo jazz cats are and try to learn it 'the hard way'.

Thanks, everyone. I was just talking to a bud of mine who picked up guitar at 40 or so as well and he felt like learning an instrument used a different part of the brain than what our day time professions tapped into. And given my brain capacity, I need all the help I can get!

Great links too. Looking forward to learning lots of stuff. Right now: muting strings, courtesy of studybass.com and ogling the work of MarloweDK on YT, among others.

I just bought an MIM Fretless Jazz two days ago and it is also midnight wine but with a white pick guard. I'm considering getting another pick guard and like the looks of the one on your bass.

Play along with Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams" There are only 3 notes in the whole song & the A only appears 1 time- the other 2 are F and G and apparently you are feeling those already. The 'bum, bum-bum feel will be easy to cop after a bit- Have fun.
