NBD: G&L Tribute SB-2

I received my new G&L Tribute SB-2 from MusicStoreLive a few days ago. I just got into playing bass (played guitar for about a year) and was looking for something that would be comfortable, inexpensive, yet decent quality (and in particular I was looking for a J neck, P body, PJ pickups). I've dealt with MSL before but never actually bought anything, but they've always been straight up and helpful regardless, so I didn't hesitate to pull the trigger and go with them now. It didn't hurt that Brian from MusicStoreLive hooked me up with a great deal, too (originally found it on the Sponsored Classified section) :)

The bass is very nice. Here's a pic:

Now, I'm looking for a comfortable, versatile, reasonably priced short scale bass.. and the bass GAS begins (hopefully not as bad as my guitar GAS) :D

It's volume, volume. About as simple as it gets!

Interesting thing about the SB-2: Rolling back the volume knob almost kind of has a similar effect to rolling back a tone knob. There is a lot of tonal versatility, despite no tone knob. If you fully utilize the different tonal options you can get from, for example, plucking up by the neck, plucking over the pup, plucking down by the bridge, having both pickups 100% on, having one pickup hotter than the other, having both pickups at 50%, etc, then there really is no need for a tone knob.

Also, if a tone knob is a big deal, modifying the SB-2 to have a tone knob is something that any half-competent guitar tech should be able to do easily and without costing too much.

Don't let the simple design fool you, it's a very versatile bass.

Drool-worthy! I thought about getting one of those Tributes. I wish they had more color choices. Maybe the LB-100 will make it to the Tribute line? I would like that!

With respect to basses, I don't know what is drool-worthy as I just started playing, but if it means anything, my recently wedded wife likes how it looks and sounds.. and I already have ~10 guitars and ~10 guitar amps, so it's not like she wants to encourage any bass GAS :D To be fair, I am selling some of the stuff, mostly because I don't use it, or to make room, or let's be honest, to buy more stuff! The good news is that I just sold both my Fender MIM P and J basses today (they were practice/"figure out what I like" basses), so there is room for at least one more bass.

Interesting-- that's exactly what Brian from MSL suggested when I asked him about short scales to look into. Though, the one I was looking at was Candy Apple Red (with white racing stripes). I do really like the look of the Lake Placid Blue over white as well, but I already have a vintage white strat (and bass, obviously). Not that color is very important, but as silly as this may sound, my philosophy is that if you really don't like how it looks, it does affect how often you'll pick it up and practice/play.
