Do you notice a change in kling/schlack string noise between the dark fretboard (palissandre? rosewood ? else ?) and the light one (mapple?)

Two with rosewood and one with maple... I really haven't noticed any difference in terms of string noise. But again, they're not strung the same.

I have one Jazz in my arsenal (a G&L) - it's not my No.1 but it gets its fair share of playing time, and sometimes you just want "that sound" you get from a J-bass. Plus I've always thought that J-basses just look cool, there's also that.

2011 American Special Jazz in Olympic White would have come with a black pickguard originally. But the previous owner of this bass swapped it for a red tort, which turned out to be a wrong one as it didn't allow the truss rod access at the heel. So, I had the brown tort ordered.

I would much prefer the dark brown over the red.

I got this one for my Olympic White Jazz. Understated yet elegant and tasty.

on this bass, I’d go with the brown.

I really haven't had a chance to rotate them regularly yet. Once I have a chance to spend some quality time with the American Specials, I'll be able to tell you better. So far, I really haven't noticed any significant difference.

Alloy 52 (nickel-iron) makes them punchy with a strong midrange. Not overly zingy up top, but enough bite to be he heard in the mix.

As a big fan of GHS Pressurewound (Alloy 52 rollerwound) I was disappointed when GHS discontinued the old version of the Progressives (Alloy 52 roundwound) back in 2019 and the "updated version", which was due out in the spring of 2020, never did come to fruition due to the pandemic. That's when I decided to try the Ultramags as the closest equivalent and have been pleasantly surprised.

Highway One = 9.4 lbs.
Sandblasted = 8.2 lbs. (thanks to swamp ash!)
American Special = 9.0 lbs.
