I made a post on this build as it was happening, but wanted to do a standalone of just the finished piece.

Picked up a 21’ Ibanez Gary Willis GWB35 thru GC Used for about $770 to my house. Had broken wiring, a chip in the finish, and was generally butt ugly with the truck liner stock finish. I fixed the electrics first, and tested the sound and playability, which were superior. Markedly better than the price paid, but the finish was unacceptable, and there were aspects of the design that I didn’t jive with.

The unique tuners would not operate with my standard power tuning tool. The bridge string pass thru holes were so tight, the strings filed shards of metal off the bridge during string changes. The ramp extended from the pickup to the neck butt, obstructing any attempt to play slap style on the bass . ( You don’t slap a fretless!!) The dual strap buttons at the bottom end of the body would require a different strap, rather than the same strap I use with all my basses ( which is connected in the center of the body below the bridge) The omission of a truss rod cover made the headstock look incomplete. So, I removed the tuners, the ramp, the strap pins, installed Ibanez Gotoh Tuners, and Ibanez quick release bridge with the identical spacing. i refinished the body, redesigned ramp, and pickup in Olympic white, and changed all the hardware to polished gold finish ( which I felt would look good with the white color of the body) .

It’s done now, and I am pleased. I built this as a keeper, to my specs, for me. Not to sell, and not what I thought someone else would like. So I’m sure Willis model fans may not appreciate the changes. But I find this version a tad more practical, and more akin to a custom than a signature. Here she is.

absolutely OUTSTANDING. This is literally the coolest looking Ibanez I've ever seen. Seriously. They should make more of them like this. Single pickup, simple control layout. Excellent work

Very impressed! Can you do mine next? 😎
As happy as I am with the outcome, and thank you for the kind words, I’ve learned I NEVER want to refinish a body again. I’m not cut out for it. The sanding and polishing alone is a daunting task. Folks that do body refinishing now have my deepest respect.

That is a job well done!👍🏿

Nice, enjoy it. Gary doesn't slap and likes the full length ramp, but if you enjoy slapping on fretless enjoy the heck out of it.
Did you do anything with the preamp?

No, the preamp was completely adequate. Ideally, I’d like to put in the Bartolini version of the preamp, but the $200 price is prohibitive.

Very nice. Someday Ibanez is going to wake up and produce a 4 string version of these basses and I'll be first in line
I actually play 4’s exclusively. The only reason I chose this bass was the playability and sound was so comfy, I didn't really mind the B string. But yea, if this came in a 4, that’d be the way I’d go.

I’ve had the portamento and the semi hollow Ibanez fretless 4’s. The fingerboard on this model is far superior. This unit has a wood board, not the phenolic on some versions and it’s really beautifully finished. Glassy smooth, and great sounding. I find the electrics have a sound I prefer vs the piezo or piezo/mag config on the other models too. I’m actually working with Jason at Fretnation to get the Bart Pre at an acceptable cost, and swap that in. I had to repair the existing unit to make it function. The stock POT was damaged and needed a bypass of the circuit paths to the terminals on the POT because the lands were just …gone. Burnt away by somebody. The new Bart pre will come with new POTS pre wired, and should also sound better ( I assume) .
