I may have missed it, if it has been previously mentioned, but is this a bolt on neck? If it is, then as Andy just said, it's an easy fix, you just need to add a shim under the neck joint. Your tech guy will totally be able to take care of that for you.

A shim is a fix for a neck that's out of line vertically. If the neck is bent/warped or twisted, it won't fix a damn thing.

Anyway, as other have said, if the neck is straight or straightenable, meaning the bass can be set up well, everything else is minor details that I would have no issues with. But if the neck can't be set up, I'd raise holy hell.

The neck on a bass is the same as "location" in real estate - if that's good, everything else can be dealt with. If not, it's a poor deal, regardless of how nice everything else is.

You should not have to shim a modulus neck to get it to play well. Truss or not they come "setup" to be very playable right out of the box. Again if the saddles are maxed thats not a positive sign.

It's crazy how many people don't read the thread before posting. A bass without a truss rod cannot have the truss rod adjusted. Not talking to anyone specifically; there are a lot of people who keep saying OP needs to adjust the truss rod.

As many others have said, if the neck is straight and the action is too high, you might just need to shim it. Those are bolt-on necks, correct? That should be a quick and easy fix, as are cleaning the pots and installing new foam. probably under a hundred bucks all told. Was the price more than a hundred bucks under market value? Then you're probably good to go.

sounds like the strings had socially distanced themselves from the fretboard, i too would be nervous about the neck, hope your guy gives the thumbs up

TL/DR; I agree with the 'fix it how you want it and move on' crowd. Put some active EMGs and a preamp in it.

As an aside, I had no idea a graphite neck could warp, or that they even had truss rod. I thought the graphite was stiff enough to not require one.

Thanks for that. Yeah I, amazed at how many "truss rod" comments there are. I've said a few times now there isn't a truss rod. When I bought this one there was another quantum 6 on reverb that that the asking price was about $1500 more than what I paid for this one. It isn't there now. Maybe it sold, maybe the seller decided to keep it. Don't know. But it's gone. Still though, what I paid isn't peanuts. I spent more then I'm comfortable pissing away j so,etching defective.
As I've said, I really hope this is an easy fix. I love the modulus sound. To my ears, they sound like really nice pianos. This one isn't the exception. It just sounds beautiful...even with my sub-par playing. Lol.

Sigh...so yeah, I just got my long awaited Modulus Graphite 6 Quantum. Been wanting one of these for a while. Finally arrived today. First, the idiot UPS guy literally left it almost on the curb in front of my house. Luckily I was home and saw on the Ring camera that he was out there. I went out and confronted him for leaving it literally just a few feet from the curb rather than bringing it to my door and ringing the doorbell and getting a signature, as is required. His excuse? "Oh I heard your dogs barking and I was afraid they would get out." Really?!? But UPS is another rant...

So anyway, I bought this bass used on Reverb. Lots of back and forth with the seller. He talked about how immaculate this thing was. He described it as "perfect." I asked in convo if there were any issues...anything I should know? "Nope! It's perfect!"

So I pulled the trigger. Today I find, that right out of the bo, the action is high enough to drive my truck under. I mean it's like cheap Squire Guitar Center high action. It's crazy But not a big deal. As I'm holding it and moving it around in my hands giving it a once over, I hear something tumbling. After not seeing anytjing obvious, I open the cavity.

The tumbling was the battery tumbling around in there. The gross, little corrosion on it battery has nothing to secure it. Next I see that the foam is brittle and broken into a thousand tiny, microscopic little pieces. It seems this bass has been neglected. So I cleaned out all the foam pieces and put a new battery in. Plug it in and am delighted to hear it sounds wonderful-like a Modulus sounds. But the pots are very scratchy. Like I'm playing and the volume just decreases on its own. I touch the volume pot and the volume comes back. Turning any of the pots, its very very scratchy.

I immediately reach out to the seller. He's being cordial but he did suggest that maybe this happened during transit. Nope! Try again dude. We're going back and forth at the moment. I will say, he seems to be very cooperative and seems he genuinely wants to make things right. As I type this, I'm cooling down.

So my first thought is; this is a bass I've wanted for a long time. The price I paid is much cheaper than what I see other quantum 6 strings selling for on Reverb. So there's a part of me that say's "Just fix it and drive on" The finish is immaculate-no scratches, no dings, nothing It looks amazing. And it has that Modulus piano sound on the notes that I can actually fret. I really am enamored with this thing. On top of everything else, the finish matches my Fodera 6 Emperor. Sending it back would be a hassle and his store policy is the buyer pays to return and refunds are minus shipping. So I'm out a couple hundred $$ if I return it. If I keep it an fix it...I haven't had electronic work done on basses so no clue what this would cost to fix. But my assumption is, maybe it would be cheaper to fix than to return.

So what would you do?

Pretty sure the tech he is taking it to tomorrow will be able to sort out the best way to deal with this problem. The neck is straight, according to the OP. That's the biggest concern here, if there's no truss rod, and he says there isn't one. Current models have one. If that saddles are maxed out low and the neck is straight then I'm clueless how this left the factory this way.

That's all I can tell ya but he's taking it to someone tomorrow who can diagnose and fix or advise. </thread>

If that neck is okay, I'd definitely just straighten the other things out and move on.

Sucks about the delivery situation. Regardless of what those folks might be going through, ignoring the signature requirement and leaving it by the curb is gross negligence, period. You could file a complaint, but nothing will come of it. Thankfully you saw it when it arrived and got it safely inside before a porch pirate jacked it.

He can have whatever policy he wants, but if he lied about the condition, I would take it to Reverb, assuming you want to send it back. Do you get all of his assertions in writing? If he said the bass was perfect, with no issues, in writing and there are issues, that is grounds to open a Reverb dispute (or whatever they call it).

You may already know how to do this, but if you want to see if that bass actually sold, you could search Modulus basses and limit the results to show only sold listings. Really helpful with determining the prices things actually sell at versus what they were listed for.

You can't defend an entire company with untold thousands of employees just from your kin's employment there. I worked for UPS in the Ontario warehouse for over 2 years during school, and there were plenty of bad apples there - lazy, would miss work with no call, under the influence, terrible scanning and sorting, completely abusive package treatment, and oh yeah - rampant theft. And since it's a union gig, which IN THIS CASE has too much power, these guys were almost impossible to fire. Which means that many of them will be in a brown truck leaving basses on curbs and throwing boxes over fences... Yes it's tough work, yes UPS is a bit of a bummer of a boss, but it pays well with good benefits. Its a shame there are bad apples ..

Do a setup on the bass and make sure the neck/truss-rod are all good. Not sure if anyone mentioned this, but "deoxIT" does wonders on scratchy/dirty/corroded pots, and only $13. Here is a link to it. If you got the bass at a good price, and everything checks out, I would keep it and not stress too much on the seller being lame, but thats just me. Good luck
