I'm going to refin a Jag in the future and have a couple questions. First, could I convince your decal-making friend to make one for me? Second, how do you go about masking off the headstock for painting? What materials do you use to get that nice sharp line?
to get the sharp line, i lacquer the whole neck with clear, with a few extra coats around the headstock edges. let it completely dry, then mask off the sides a little lower than the edge line. i let that dry and block wet sand the line perfectly straight with 1000 grit, apply the decal and shoot clear over it to bury it into the finish and lacquer the edges again. when dry, i wet sand the neck (using a block on the heel, and front & rear of the headstock, and then buff it all out on a buffing wheel.
Cool. What kind of tape do you use to mask it off? I've had mixed results with using blue painters tape around the house, but that was while rolling paint. Perhaps spraying is easier to get a good line as it would be less likely to seep under the tape's edge. I've also seen different types of painters tape at the home stores claiming to offer a superior clean edge. Your thoughts?
i just use 3m blue masking tape. it doesn't matter if it slightly seeps under the tape since i wet sand it with a block and use the the edges to give me a perfect line.
but 3M's fine line (automotive) tape will also give a sharp line if that's what you're looking for.
