NBD-Jag bass #2

got the neck on wednesday. i stripped the finish, shaved it, installed new 3/32" side dots (they come with 2mm dots), installed a new fender nut, sealed and nitro'd it, and painted the headstock black to match the body yesterday. today i put a decal on it and buried it into the finish with clear nitro. here's a pic of the headstock before buffing it (wet sanded w/4000 grit) :

the new res-o-lite tuners will arrive monday, and i've been slow-baking the lacquer to speed up the curing/drying process. that way i can buff it, install the tuners and mount it on the bass by monday evening.

cool you don't see a decal in white ink everyday

it's actually silver ink. it just looks white in the pic (especially against the black).

just tried a tortoise guard on it to see how it looks, but i think i'm going to stay with the mint/white one (i think i prefer the 'tuxedo look' more).

John, that is another work of beauty. It surprises me you're experimenting with different PG's, as I thought you were in love with white ones.

I'm wondering what a b/w/b PG would look like on your latest creation. You'd keep the tuxedoclassy-look, but with more awesome I'd say. Especially with the blocked rosewood, you'd echo the dark background with light elements of that with a black PG against those chrome plates.

thanks!
i'm a fan of mint, parchment and white guards on custom colored basses (black being one of them) and tortoise on burst and olympic white ones. i really don't care for black on any fender basses, and i actually like the way that the white compliments the chrome plates better than the darker (black or tort) guards. i do think that an anodized gold aluminum one would look killer on the rosewood/black one, but i'd have to have it custom made.

Fair enough. I'm not sure about that gold anodized idea. It could go either way, either slick as hell or bling overkill against the chrome. You could try it with paper, if you don't want to spend any moneys? Just cut a piece of gold colored paper to size and scotchtape it on there. See what happens.

Or you could make your own:

I really need a compressor and a spray gun....

again, what a beauty John. Wish you were on Fender's design team.

it's funny you should say that, because back in 1985/86 when John page was the head of Fender's custom shop, he asked me to work for them as a 'master builder' for their artist endorsees only. i probably should have taken him up on it, but i was in a pretty successful band and had just opened my own shop in '85.

thanks! some may say that the bound neck doesn't make that big of a difference (or may not be worth the cost of doing it), but to me, it really does. plus, i'm such a 'traditionalist' that i don't like my rosewood board necks to have a 'skunk' stripe on the back of them, or a truss rod access hole on the headstock. plus, i have control of shaping and adding rollover to the neck to my preference.

See, now, this is exactly what is so great about this project of yours. You start off with an idea that makes me wonder what the added value is, as it's not going to differ much from the original. And then it doesn't differ that much in the end, but somehow it makes the bass a lot more beautiful. More of a unit, instead of some put together parts. The colours all go together a lot better and it just looks better. And that's just visual, I can't speak for the playing improvements that I'm sure it has (what with those rolled edges you were talking about and whatnot).

Also, that black headstock is just boobies. You know exactly what a bass needs, man. I'm a fan.

Say, where do you get a hold of those necks btw? Just Ebay, or warmoth or something?

thanks again.
i just felt if fender would've made a jag bass back in '67, they would have matched the headstock on a black one, and the neck would be block & bound just like the guitar, since it was the 'top of the line' ( plus it just looks more correct that way to me). the necks that i use are 'licensed by fender' from allparts.com, and they use the same construction as a vintage fender neck,(only they have a 9.5" radius). from what i've heard, they're actually made in the tokai factory for fender japan.

i love their necks, and everytime that i replace a neck with one, besides the aesthetics, they also improve the bass's tone.

the bass looks so good man!

any idea where to get replacement pick up selector switches? someone went into my room (door closed) and knocked my jag off of its stand when i was away for the weekend. What nnice friends!
