well you finally got it huh.... my only issue with my black one was the crummy VVBT hazlab preamp setup ....
you want me to look for my string tree?
I never used that tree because it looked stupid, and I never had an issue with break angle over the nut causing rattle or issues NOT using it.
I know this is an ancient thread - but just because it's relevant, I wanted to post my findings:
I recently finished restoring(ish - enough to be very playable at least with low action) a forum iii recently, and am making it my main 4 string fretted bass.
IMHO the greatest thing about it is the 9v hazlab vvtb preamp - it's amazing sounding and very adjustable. I really miss an active tone control on it though since the hazlab is boost only 12db for treble and bass... one of the main reasons it sounds the way it does (like a spector ns-2a).
I've been craving this tone for years and never quite got it without some serious compromises.... now I don't have much in the way of compromise:
- lightish bass (lighter than my ebmm by couple pounds!)
- neck through (generally my preference)
- very low action (after a heck of a lot of work)
- super solid steinberger bridge (I love these)
- brand new brass nut (due to the terrible headstock design from a physics point of view)
- tension bar from one of my guitars (doesn't fit perfectly but necessary to keep g string reliable)
- nice inlays (diamonds)
- the first example in my life of emg select style pickups (the "spector" pickups in it) that actually sound truly great - properly matched to the hazlab preamp appears to be teh main reason... although like all select style pickups, a little shy on high frequencies... but treble control on amp makes up for it and the sound is pretty indistinguishable from my friend's NS-2A... to his disgust)
- hazlab grunt - what else can I say about that?
- super versatile pj pickups that both sound good alone and amazing together.... when the heights are setup properly.
One of the greatest steals in solid basses you can find if you dig the spector sound and feel.
