NBD: Little Crow 3-String Bass

Just arrived - Little Crow BO3 Blues Plank Bass. Report soon....

Initial report:
Made in the picturesque town of Toodyay, an hour or so from my home town of Perth, Western Australia. Very basic (not even a tone knob), but light, resonant, and heaps of fun. The woods are of high quality, and this example has a jarrah fretboard (jarrah is one of the world's premium hardwoods, but rarely seen as a tone wood). The single pickup does what it needs to. Short scale. The neck is straight all the way down, so while it is not really any slimmer than the equivalent 4-string at the nut, it definitely is at the octave. It has a chunky D profile, but is really easy to play (I have small hands, and am pretty much exclusively short scale nowadays). Reasonably priced, and highly recommended.

Looks like fun, if short a couple of strings from what I'm used to. What are you planning to use it for?

It took me a few minutes to realise who made it, then remembered Justin Johnson's signature was made by Little Crow. I'm a big fan of his and long time subscriber to his YT channel.

I don't buy into the whole tonewood thing for solidbodies, but I love Jarrah and I have a bunch of it here to use in some builds later. It's a lovely timber.

The sort of music I do lends itself to a three string (my gigging bass is a Guild Starfire, but I seldom use the G string anyway), and this one is effortless to play. Yeah, Justin Johnson does a clip with this model bass, as does Davie504, strangely enough (google "3-String Bass Solo"). I definitely think tonewoods play a play a part in solid body instruments, particularly where there is chambering. My dad was a shipwright, and I was always surrounded by wood as I kid. I often wondered whether jarrah could be used as a tonewood. The conventional wisdom is no, but it seems to work as a fretboard wood.
