I've been gassing for a Fender Precision for some time now, and I finally pulled the trigger on a new Fender American Standard Precision Bass in 3-color sunburst, with a rosewood board. I strung it with flats as soon as I got it home, and it has all the warmth, thump and growl I could want from a good P-bass. While my USA Spectors & CIJ Geddy Lee Jazz Bass deliver awesome classic rock & modern metal sounds, I was looking for something that served up authentic old-school Bob Babbitt & James Jamerson tones, and the American Standard has more than exceeded my expectations without breaking the bank. {} {} {}
my 2013 (also burst) is really nice but recently put Sadowsky Black Label flats on her and she sounds soooo much nicer. Flats go great with the CS 60s.
Thanks for posting! I can't remember the last time I saw a P-bass with a tort pickguard strung with flats on this site. I bet it sounds GREAT with absolutely no EQ or coloration whatsoever from an amp. It's nice to see people thinking "out da box"!!! Just kidding...great burst and nice wood character on that bass actually!
GHS flats. Very nice feeling set. Purple silks on the post ends, no silks on the ball ends. From what I have read, they really balance out after 100 hours or so of playing, but they are sounding pretty darned good so far after just 5 hours of play time....
I know, so rare to see a bass like this, huh? Part of the appeal of this bass for me was having something so universally classic & iconic in both tone and appearance. As for thinking "out of the box", I have that pretty well covered with my custom NEO "RockBass", built many years ago for me by Pennsylvania luthier Rich Roland.... {} {}
I just noticed you're playing thru a Roland 100W Basscube... maybe you can go over here and give this guy a quick review... he's looking for a small/good combo http://www.talkbass.com/threads/looking-for-100w-amp-combo.1128477/#post-16853090
I love that typical burst, tort classic look. I used to really despise it. Actually painted an early 70s Precision which was burst/tort to Lake Placid blue. Whish I had not and still had it :***:. On my American Standard burst/tort I have been thinking about putting the ashtray and pickup cover on it to really complete that classic look. The thing is, the Precision plucking hand position gives so many tone variations, I don't want to lose the 'over the pup' tone I tend to go to at times. Either way congrats on a killer and classic sounding bass guitar.
