NBD - Ovation Magnum I

I was randomly on craigslist for the first time in months and happened across this local Ovation Magnum for sale. Been trying to score one at a decent price and got a great deal on it. And only a 20 minute drive from my house. Anyway, it could used some new strings (I'm thinking TI Jazz Flats maybe?) and a bit of a set up, but I'm digging it. Not a bad day.

Thanks! It's got a small ding on the bottom edge and a bit of a gash in the headstock, but other than that it's in really, really nice shape.

Mine doesn't have many dings if any, but all of the metal parts are far more corroded than yours.

It definitely gets into heavy dub territory with the tone on the neck pickup rolled back. Deep as the ocean. I was surprised how hot and cutting the bridge pickup is. I'm hoping to find a set of flats that will compliment them both. I like Chromes but Im not sure their what this bass needs. I also dig Dunlop flats. Definitely appreciate the Pyramid suggestion though!

Beautiful! And the pickguard is even intact.
I went in the opposite direction with strings and love the focused deep articulate sound you get with both pickups when using roundwounds. It can out Rickenbacker a 4001.

I've had mine strung with LaBella 760Fm extra longs for a few years now and thinking of getting rounds. What are you using?

That is one sweet unit!! I'm looking for one myself. Just my opinion but I'd go rounds on the strings just for that nasty snarl. Plus when you want you can dampen the rounds down to sound like flats without too much trouble. Awesome bass.

yeah, the mute is still intact. if there are no pieces missing from the headstock being banged and bumped, you've definitely scored.

i'm hoping to fall into either a magnum I or II in red one day.

As an adolescent I used to lust over The Magnum purely based on the ads in Guitar Player magazine long ago. ( late 70's )

I've still never actually encountered one in person!

Cheers! No idea what its currently strung with. Just some random dead rounds. Always open to string suggestions from people that own a Magnum though.
