If it's sunburst or ash it can look cool with no pickguard.

Jazzes with no pick guard, but with the chrome control plate by itself look weird to me.

If you don't have a pick guard, then the controls should be on the back of the bass, leaving the front nice and perfectly clean.

I got a black j bass that I ditched the pg of. As mentioned above, use a black sharpie to fill out any part that has the bare wood and you're good.

If I went with a pg, I'd be black

Get a chrome pickguard. Make a complete piece out of the controls. That'd be better looking than the flat black on gloss
