NBD: Poor Man's Klaus Flouride

I'm curious if you know what the various DK guys did in the years between the band's initial break up and then reformation. Jello was out there, but Klaus and East Bay Ray were pretty quiet.

One of my favorite DK memories was opening up that Frankenchrist poster in the car next to my dad with no idea what was in store and we were both like "uhhh." Fortunately my old man was pretty cool about it.
They were both playing with various bands and artists in the Bay Area. For example I played bass in a surf band with both of them (Klaus was on guitar in that band, actually it was a three guitar surf band--pretty fun). They were always up to somethin'!

Klaus is a true gentleman. I've known those guys for a while, have played with them in various configurations (RIP DH). I subbed for Klaus on a US DK tour about 12 years ago when he was taking a break. Was very challenging.

Wow that is really amazing!! Dead Kennedys are my all time favorite band! I remeber when he took a break and he was on the verge of retiring from the band but came back. RIP DH! A terrible loss.

Fun fact, that name (which I probably can't type in here without the auto-censor correcting it) wasn't the only name that band ever performed under. They toured under a bunch of other names before settling on that one, some even less printable to this site. You can read about them on their Wikipedia page if you're curious, but fair warning, they're very crass.

Wow two of my all time favorites in one thread, DKs and the Surfers!

Very cool and innovative band. After touring with the DKs I did an album with Ray with Paul Leary producing. Paul is hilarious and brilliant.

What album is that! I have to hear it. You've worked with my all time favorite musicians. Did Paul tell you that he was responsible for getting John Paul Jones to quit drinking during the production of Independent worm saloon?

It was called the Killer Smiles. Amazing drummer on it, my pal Steve Wilson. I did not hear the JPJ story--very cool. Fun TB geek fact, we tried about 4-5 different basses and ended up using my Jazz with the Ultra J's in it (with a B15R). He liked it enough where he put the Ultras in his own J:)

I remember hearing about that band years ago but never found any recordings. Do you know where I can get the album? Oh, and Jeff Pinkus told me the JPJ story and some other cool suff too like JPJ played fretless on Ballad of Naked man and Jeff played banjo.

It was on Spotify et al but not sure why it was pulled down. It was re-mastered and re-released by PIG Records recently: PIG Records - The Killer Smiles
