Well my self imposed GAS suppression finally gave way, I bought a Chinese made Tokai Jazz Bass. They call it Baby Blue or something, but it looks Daphne Blue to me, or close to it. Matching headstock too

Now, do I sell the VM P to restore balance to my universe? I'm really digging Jazz style basses all of a sudden.

Yes, there is a missing screw on this "mint" bass. Might go for a cream 'guard, despite my tort tendencies...

Enabler, ENABLER! Haha, tort is almost always my go-to, but I'm trying to be different. I had a Mark Hoppus signature bass in a very similar colour that looked good with a (very) aged white pearloid guard... That or cream/vintage white.



Or tort.

Matching headstock alone makes it look so much nicer than this.

As for tort, it doesn't help this, either.

Considering the bottom of the barrel electronics and generic ceramic pickups, actually quite good! I might replace the neck pickup with an AlNiCo pup with a bit more warmth for when I want to cop that P-ish sound.

The bridge I'll swap for the usual threaded saddle model I like, the rest is fine.

What a great find! If I came across a Tokai, I'd buy it but would need to explain to my wife that it was a necessary acquisition. That might prove difficult, but worth it.

No question, keep both.

Even though I am a lover of tort, I think this particular color works better in white. Maybe try a pearloid or aged white that's not quite so cream.

Luckily, I am both clumsy, and an oaf (and the dad to 4 and 2 year old wrecking machines), so it'll get a bit of wear on it before long. Feels great to play, it's going to get rocked.

Nice find! I've been nosing around for a Tokai myself lately.

With the color on yours, I'd go with a mint green guard -- that would look SWEET!

Or even better, send your guard off to someone and have them age/relic it... turn it a mint green/aged yellow. That would be a cheaper option than having one replicated. If you were in the States, MJT in Missouri will NAIL IT with the color!

A couple of my friends back in the 80's had these basses (Japanese then) and the Brezzy sound guitar (Tele). The quality of these was so much higher than a lot of the brands that were around back then.

Man I can relate. When you need a jazz, you need a jazz. That's a nice looking bass.
