As for tort, it doesn't help this, either.

Disagree. I like a mint guard better than tort with this finish and I don't much care for matching painted headstocks.

Are those stock strings? It looks like, ideally, there should be another wrap or two around the tuning posts.

Leave the white PG on. Tort - yucky poo.

I think I'd try a cream or mint PG.

It's not at all uncommon to fall madly in love with a J after having only a P.
They sound great around the house.

Then you try it in a band setting and find out what the P was doing for you all along.

Keep both.

Well my self imposed GAS suppression finally gave way, I bought a Chinese made Tokai Jazz Bass. They call it Baby Blue or something, but it looks Daphne Blue to me, or close to it. Matching headstock too

Now, do I sell the VM P to restore balance to my universe? I'm really digging Jazz style basses all of a sudden.

Yes, there is a missing screw on this "mint" bass. Might go for a cream 'guard, despite my tort tendencies...

39mm nut, chunky profile neck for a JB. Weighs in at 9lbs 9oz.

Keep both the P & the J. They are two distinct flavors of electric bass. You can 'get close' to overlapping their sound, but just accept they are different and should be enjoyed and highlighted for that difference.

They seem to be on eBay/Reverb UK at silly prices, stay there for ages and the sellers eventually accept low offers. Got this one for Squier money. I'm not 100% sure they're real Tokais or just some knockoff with a decal. A knockoff of a knockoff

I don't know, there are an awful lot of people playing J basses in famous bands, and they don't seem to have a problem. A bit more EQ tuning needed sometimes, but this whole "J gets buried live, you need a P" mentality is a little simplistic. Then again, so am I, so maybe the P really is all I need

A couple of my friends back in the 80's had these basses (Japanese then) and the Brezzy sound guitar (Tele). The quality of these was so much higher than a lot of the brands that were around back then.

These are either Chinese reissues or "Fakais", they're nowhere near the quality of the old (or even current) MIJ Tokais. That said, it's a very playable bass, and it cost Squier money.
