Little update: I've been putting the old Silvertone to work. It appears to have been played quite a bit in the past. (Note the little spot where the finish got worn through by the pickup.) It's not the easiest axe to tune up or play. But there is definitely a lot of personality, and that's something I've come to appreciate over most other qualities in an instrument. I like chunky necks that let me dig in, and I also like a good strong pickup.
The Silvertone definitely gets attention. The BL last night usually wants upright bass, but she told me I could play electric if I used this. I was all too happy to oblige; it was pretty much ideal for a country gig in a small bar.
The 2-saddle bridge that's hacked on there is working OK for now. The set screws were way too long & digging in to my hand so I swapped those out. (Turned out to be quite wide – and metric, go figure!)
I'll keep my eyes open for a more compatible replacement bridge, or at least one with slightly narrower spacing. I'm trying to keep this project budget as low as possible. OTOH I fully intend to keep giving this bass the stage time it deserves.
