NBD - Sire P7 alder sunburst 4-string

A bittersweet time to get this since no more gigs until ??
I've owned dozens of basses over 30 years from moderate to low price. Almost all were purchased as used since I'm a "bang for the buck" bargain hunter, as well as a believer in diminishing return on cost. As the years pass I find that I'm fully satisfied with lower priced instruments that sometimes require a bit of tweaking but end up playing and sounding fine.

My interest in the Sire brand was piqued last year and I finally decided to get one. This is the first new bass I've bought in a long time but at $475 delivered it seemed worth a try.

I'm not an authority on basses but I know what I like, and I like a fast Jazz neck, an instrument that is light-medium weight, low action without fret buzz, and pickups that sound full and clear. If the bass looks good, that's a bonus.
This Sire seems to check all of those boxes, other than the headstock shape is just OK.

I've only had the bass a week, and of course haven't played it with the band because of self-isolation, so I could change my opinion. But my current opinion is that this is a great value. I love love love the neck shape with rolled edges. The pickups sound as good as any I've heard, fret work is excellent, fit/finish also very fine, and good volume balance between the P and J. The preamp provides wide ranging tone shaping, although I find I prefer the passive mode.
This is likely because all of my basses are passive and I use external preamps that I can alternate as the mood or conditions dictate.

The only "mod" that I immediately performed was to smooth the edges of the pickup covers, which were sharp and my resting thumb didn't like.
I can hardly wait to play with the band to hear the Sire in the setting that matters most, maybe in June, or September, or next year, or .... ??

My first (and only) bass is a 2nd Gen V3 and I'm really grateful for all the recommendations and the great experience with CME. Congratulations on your new bass. The rolled edges are very nice. Nice looking bass:thumbsup:.

Yes, maybe no more gigs this year in all reality.

Glad you’re pleased with your P7, the sunburst on Sire basses is one of my favourites.

I love mine (5 string) but it’s by no means perfect, the neck pocket fit isn’t brilliant, the gap between the body and neck is a fraction too big really. Also some of the frets are a bit harsh to the touch towards the top of the neck on both sides. The biggest issue I had with mine was that the pickguard was de-laminating, the Bass was replaced but the pickguard on the replacement was even worse! I ended up having one made locally.

Having said that it is still a superb bass, sounds good, looks good and plays very well indeed!

I quite like the headstock, it’s somewhere between a Fender and a Sadowsky in shape in my opinion. Tuners are good and the bass stays in tune very well.

Keep on rockin!

The internet store I purchased from supposedly includes a setup. I don't know how it was directly from the box but the frets are great and the setup perfect, so maybe a setup was truly done.
I've noticed the top clear pickguard layer delaminating in one area. I've email Sire about it to ask about a replacement. They replied that they first need a receipt, which I've provided two days ago. Considering the chaotic state of the world I presume they're working from home so I'll wait a bit longer.

Yeah, they tend to de-laminate around the screw holes mainly, mine lifted about 2” at the very end of the pickguard near the last pot. Must be a bad batch?

Thomann were unable to obtain a replacement pickguard so I got a 10% refund with which I’ve had a pickguard custom made at Jack’s Instrument Services in Manchester UK. Very good quality pickguard and it now looks the mutt’s nuts!
