I've been on a bit of a buying/selling/trading bender the last 6 months. I almost never buy anything new - my last new bass was a Spector Bantam 5 two years ago. I would have bought one used but it was impossible to find any medium scale 5 strings, let alone that specific model.
Anyways, I was at a local Guitar Center last weekend seeing about trading something in and exploring inventory. They had a Modulus Q5 I wanted to check out (neck was trashed, action had to be > 4mm). A blue Stingray caught my eye (it was obviously a short scale). I picked it up and was instantly blown away.
A USA Stingray short scale has been on my list but I've never actually played one. My #1 right now is a Stingray 5 Special and I've owned a few USA Stingrays. If you blindfolded me and handed me this bass I would have guessed it was a USA model, no questions asked.
I've played a few Sterling short scales over the years. They were always setup poorly (typical Guitar Center...) and none of them ever grabbed me.
Maybe this is just a good one? Maybe they've just nailed it with the new roasted maple neck version?
This was probably the best setup bass I've played at a Guitar Center. Action was perfect, intonation was spot on (I've made one SLIGHT adjustment since getting it home). I like working on basses, every weekend I have one of my basses or a friend's bass on the bench. This one needs nothing - except to be played!
Got it home and on my rig it sounded and felt as good as it did in the store. I feel like I'm proving to myself I haven't gotten too bougie. For less than $600 out the door for a brand new bass this thing is frickin incredible. It's going to replace my Reverend Sentinel (also a fantastic bass), the tone of a Stingray and the narrower nut width fit me better.
The neck even has a bit of flame to it.
And just for fun a size comparison of the 30" Stingray vs my 35" Elrick
