NBD: Tobias Classic 4 (# 524)

So I actually received the bass several days ago now, but I finally got it completely setup (by Dave Segal of New York Bass Works no less) and it's on its way to its first practice tonight.

So, here is the official TB unveiling as well.

I purchased this from a fellow Talk Bass member, Chuck, who couldn't have made the transaction more pleasant and easy. He is a total gentleman and kind-hearted guy. I only had to promise to play my heart out on this thing and that's exactly what I intend.

The finish is in superb condition, especially considering this bass was build by Mike Tobias and his team in 1987. I believe I'm only the third owner in that time.

During the purchase I reached out to Mike and he informed me that the body is walnut and alder, and that the neck is maple, pau ferro and purpleheart. This somewhat different layout of the knobs is something they did for a while. It's a Bartolini pre, TCT, and the knobs are V,V, passive tone up top, with bass, mid and treble controls down low. Switch is A/P.

Mike answered me about the bass right away, and finished his letter to be with "Cool bass".
Haha, cool bass indeed Mike.

And a little plug here for David Segal at NYBW. He set this up with unbelievably low action and had a lot of nice things to say about the bass, including the unplugged tone, condition, and look of the piece. I even got to hear some Jaco stories from the time they knew one another as a bonus. He's got some amazing instruments there so if you're in NY check him out for sure.

Needless to say, I'm one thrilled dude to possess a bass of this caliber! Rock on!

I’m a fan of low action myself.
To be honest I've been banging away at strings for my whole life there's a learning curve here. I think that was the result of playing in bands with too loud guitarists and also from being too lazy to plug in... I trained myself to play the strings VERY hard. But I'm enjoying what I can do with a lighter touch, certainly my left hands loves it... it's the right that will need a bit of retraining.

#524, great. That's a piece of history.
Congrats.
That is a mighty fine looking instrument! Enjoy!
Beautiful bass!
Thanks guys!
I'm still wrestling with this Bartolini preamp to get some control over my tone. It's got a wide range and along with my SansAmp RPM I'm just all over the place tonally. I guess I just need to experiment and eventually I'll nail down a sound I'm happy with. Only means I need to play MORE! :)

Congrats dude! As we all know, those pre-Gib Tobias basses are really something special. Welcome to the club! I have #568.

I'll absolutely second your statement that the preamp has so much flexibility it's tough to get something dialed in and set - it'll do anything you ask it to.

And yea, your finish looks great for a nearly 30 year old bass! Mine has a fair share of bumps and bruises.

Can you tell me a little about the case? Is that a custom?

As I have posted elsewhere, the TCT in my hands is capable of producing some fantastic and useful tones. BUT, I find that the onboard preamp is SO strongly voiced that it does not often play well with preamps which are voiced for more traditional, Fender-ish instruments. In fact, the ONLY three amps I have found where I am entirely happy with the TCT preamp are the SVT, the Demeter VTBP-201 preamp, and the new Bergantino B|Amp. Possible there are others; but, the TCT just seems to want a very flat gain structure. FWIW.

Oh boy, that's a beauty.. Many years ago - must've been around the time that bass was born, I recall playing a Tobias at a local store in the Netherlands. To this day I remember how impressed I was by the pure quality of it. Fit and finish, playability - all perfect. It was my dream bass for years, but ofcourse way outside my price range at that time.

Congratulations - awesome instrument.. Play with passion!

Regards
Mark

The case was apparently manufactured by a music store in California, and since it fits the bass perfectly I figured someone had it made. I'll ask the guy I bought it from if he's got any more info on it, and I'll take a photo of the exterior when I get a chance and upload it for you.
Thanks for the warm welcome.

I'm looking into some of these pre-amps now. I'm playing through a Sansamp RBM and sometimes my RBI. I'm having a little trouble with the tones still but it just means I need more time with it. And more gear. Yeah, probably gotta get a bunch new gear to go with the new bass. :bassist:

Does your TCT have the mid module, or is it the standard treble/bass boost only with the mid only being a notch filter? The TCT is actually a tone shaping circuit, not an "EQ" and all the knobs affect each other as you move them. Really the TCT is a Fender bassman in a box. I love the TCT because it doesn't need much help, it shapes the tone enough on it's own where you can plug straight into a DI box and sound like you're running through a nice amp. However, like @bucephylus said, because of that amps/pres that have strongly voiced tone shapes built into them (SWR, GK, etc) really can work against the TCT and leave you messing with eq all night. Because of this, I took to building my own rack with components I liked and now I can't stand to play most bass heads because I instantly hear their tone shaping lol.
