I had a white RI Mustang Bass a long time ago but sold it because I'm a guitar player and wasn't playing bass much. As soon as I sold it I joined a band where I needed to play the bass on a few songs. UUGH. Not wanting to spend much money on another bass I ended up with an Ibanez Mikro bass which actually felt great and sounded great. The shorter scale was an easy transition from the guitar to bass. I liked it so much I ended up getting the 5 String Mikro, which only weighs 7lbs!
When the Mustang came out with the PJ configuration AND in red, I had to have one. I have been looking off an on for the lightest one I could find. All of my guitars are under or close to 7lbs, so I didn't want a heavy bass. While looking, I was only finding them at close to 8lbs or over 8lbs. Finally, the timing was right, I had the money and found one is 7lb 10oz. I should have it by Saturday.
The only mod I plan to do right away is to replace the tuners with the Hipshot Ultralite Clover tuners which should reduce the overall weight and prevent any neck dive. The only other thing aesthetically that I like is the Fender vintage-style jazz bridge cover, but I don't want to negate the weight savings of the ultralite tuners. The ultralite tuners are supposed to save 8oz. The specs say the cover weight is 3.2oz. It looks so sweet though, especially on the red body, I ended up buying the cover. I can always sell the cover if I ultimately decide not to use it. The photo of the cover installed on a red PJ Mustang came from a YouTube demo video.
The one I bought has the Pau Ferro fingerboard. I did have a chance to test out a Mustang PJ bass with the Pau Ferro fingerboard before buying this one online. The fingerboard surface felt rough like it was sprayed with something that left little bubbles on it. It didn't feel like wood, but some sort of composite. It was weird. I do like Rosewood better, the darkness and feel of it, but we will see how it works out.
