Been thinking lately about trying a 5'er once again. Couldn't find anything that really spoke to me; I'm not really a fan of active instruments and about the only thing I knew I somewhat liked is the Squier Deluxe Active V Jazz. I owned one a few years ago and miss it a bit, but just couldn't get past the active thing. Maybe I'm just weird.

Anyway, I walk into a pawn shop ~1 mile from work and the familiar Peavey headstock caught my eye right away. After playing around with it for a minute, I left with a new toy.

Sorry for the picture quality, the only camera I have with me is on my phone. Bass is in overall good shape, and it has the Super Ferrite pups in it. Input jack needs a bit of work, and it is in desperate need of a setup, but for the price I paid I'm not complaining a bit.

Thanks folks! I absolutely love old Peavey, and the closer I get to having an all-Peavey fleet the more I like the idea. Dunno if I'll ever get rid of my Fender or SX Jazz basses, but nothing says I can't keep adding Peaveys at every opportunity, right? My two T-40s love their new adopted family member so far! :)

I'm not 100% sure - all I know is they're the Peavey Super Ferrites. I'm sure a bit of searching around will get tons of answers, these seem to be pretty popular amongst the Peavey fans.

I'm hoping to pop the cover off the back tonight and see about the input jack. May just need cleaning or to be tightened up, but it's for sure going to need a bit of attention. Also need to finish setting it up. Hoping I get to play it for reals this weekend!

I've actually managed to find several killer deals in local pawn shops: this for $55 OTD, my 83' T-40 for $80 OTD, and my '76 P bass for $450 (with original case... man I miss that bass).

There are, of course, the insane prices that others are used to also. I saw an Epi Goth T-bird with crap glued all over it marked at $499 the other day. Plus several $2- and 300 Squiers.

Every once in a while I come across something either real neat or just a screaming deal in local pawn shops. It only takes a couple of minutes to look through the new arrivals, and the more you stop in and the people behind the counter get familiar with you, the better they're likely to treat you. It's win-win, as long as you're patient.

I'm thinking seriously about trying my hand at refinishing this bass. It's got a bunch of small scrapes and gouges on it. Not that they bother me all that much; I really don't mind that it's lived a bit before I got my hands on it. I just really want to learn about refinishing and building, so that one day I might feel like taking on a Warmoth or eventual scratch-build.

For as little money as I've got tied up in this one, and as unlikely as I am to ever sell it, I figure I might as well go ahead and go crazy. I've got an idea for a finish that I really want to see if I can make work. Hopefully I'll be able to start on the disassembly and prep work this weekend.
