NBD :) VM Squier 5 string

Well I haven't been on this site in a while but I figured Id pop on to let you guys and gals know how I feel about the new vintage modified series 5 string jazz bass.

wow.. Im more then impressed. I don't have a whole lot of experience with basses, Ive owned 2 up to this point. one being an 80$ precision and the other a fender jaguar. this bass is wicked !.

Sound. from what I can tell and I have as much recording experience as I do bass playing this thing is a keeper. very clean sound but not hi-fi in anyway. can sound very natural with the bridge pickup turned down and no issues with the B string sounding muddy or flat. great sustain too !.

Looks. unreal. the finish is stellar and the pockets on the inside for the electronics are even cleaned up and painted. more then I can say for the jaguar :\, the neck has a nice smooth finish... Im not sure what its called but feels like natural wood not the thick sticky clear. the pick plate looks cleanly cut and the wood grain is more or less perfect except for a small not on the back.

Im sure there is a million things Im not covering so feel free to ask me questions and Ill even throw some pics and sound samples up soon. :)

do I recommend this bass ?.. YES. for coming to under 400$ with taxes through a music store I'm more then pleased. Ill probably make a few cosmetic changes to it, like sand the logo off and change the pickgaurd to a tortoise but thats all just personal things :)

So what? Are you ashamed of playing à Squier? You say it's a great bass, right? Isn't that what matters? It shouldn't matter what brand it is. And no matter if you sand of the logo it's still a squier.
Be proud that you got a great bass cheap instead and stand up for what you play. Or sell it and buy a fender.

You can't be for real right? Sanding of the logo don't change the fact that it is à Squier.
That was one of the most stupid things I heard. Are you à troll or what?

Me? I just didn't like the black logo. I'm not a troll. I find it more stupid that you're getting so worked up about it. If me and the OP want to sand off squier logos, let us. Don't wet yourself.

EDIT: Oh and congrats on your new bass OP, I've heard only good things about the VM squiers. :bassist:

Well I don't wet myself. No worries mate ;-)
Just think you should like what you like without being ashamed.
And I reacted to the statement that it wouldn't be a Squier anymore if you sand of the logo. Thats rediciolus.

It's not that I'm ashamed, I just genuinely didn't like the whole "Squier P-Bass" logo. I was gonna put a fender decal one there but I think the headstock looks nice with nothing on it. I would leave the VM logo on though. They look much nicer than the affienty ones

Personally I wouldn't mutilate my bass just for looks.. Are you going to re finish the sanded off portion .. or are you going to just have a bass with this ugly rash on the headstock.. just curious.. It is what it is.. if it plays good and you like it... what else matters..

If its a natural finish and the wood is clean, sanding the logo off very carefully and sanding the whole front instead of just the logo portion, you won't be able to see any evidence that there used to be a logo there. I bought a VM P neck off of CL for a project and sanded the logo off since I didn't want someone else's logo on a bass that I made (except the neck of course)

Im not trying to pass it off as anything else other then a squier. I just dont like brand names on things I use. just about everything I own has had the name torn off at some point. just a personal view, not trying to make it into something its not and if someone were to ask I would tell them exactly what it is. Its more of a desing thing I like it clean :)

I don't quite get why you would remove the logo at all, but at least you're not trying to pass it off as something it's not. I've always thought replacing a Squier logo with a Fender logo as being the height of lameness. Taking it off for the reasons you state ain't so bad.
Oh, and congrats on your new bass.
Got any pics?

You might see how far you can get with a bottle of Goof-Off. I don't know that all of the logos/finishes are done the same way, but I found the logo on a Active Deluxe V was on the surface. It took a little work, but Goof-Off broke it down and took it off.

I don't think you need to explain yourself. Why bother?
