If you know somebody with a Dremel tool with a saw disc, you can just cut the bridge screws down to the right height. I've done it many times, and it's easy and cheap.

For the money you paid, if it plays, it's excellent value!

For a thick humbucker sound, I'd get some nice Thomastik Jazz Flats.

The only problem with that is the strings would be more than he paid for the bass!

Heh! Quite true - Sounds like most of the projects I dream up, like a SUB Ray 4 armed up with an Aguilar pickup and OBP -2 preamp. If the electronics don't surpass the cost of the bass, they at least equal it!

this. put the screw slots back in with the same saw disc. done and done.

But definitely looks like we've tracked down what it is, close enough for me at least. Thinking I'm just going to slap bridge and pick-up covers on it, get some flatwound strings, and call it a day.
