For the money you paid, if it plays, it's excellent value!
For a thick humbucker sound, I'd get some nice Thomastik Jazz Flats.
The only problem with that is the strings would be more than he paid for the bass!
If you know somebody with a Dremel tool with a saw disc, you can just cut the bridge screws down to the right height. I've done it many times, and it's easy and cheap.
