Allentown, PA!
My Christmas present to myself. It was an excellent chance to get my hands of that most excellent Fender Japan mojo -- they do it right, and anyone who has played one will likely agree. These Aerodynes come up once and a while on Reverb for $999.99 -- that's when I nabbed this 'open box' offering.

I have many P Basses, and THIS one makes me wish I was still a gigging player because it really is a slight update that makes it fast, solid, and kinda tank-like. Like it would be a great gigging bass -- it sounds great, the fretwork is excellent, the weight is pretty much center for basses at 8 lb 8 oz.

I'm not even going to start on how gorgeous it is -- all of the examples that I've seen here at TB are fire. Gosh, that red sunburst? Amazing! Really dig that logo that sort of looks like it's made of inlaid chrome.

You'll see that, because the bass has a carved top, the Babicz bridge is sunken into the body -- I add this as a geeky detail for those who believe better contact 'tween bridge and body is super important (it is) which adds to the contact-maximizing Babicz. It's a cool bridge, doesn't get in the way for me (I play back there with a pick often) and it fits the Fender profile better than more massive massive-type bridges.

So keep and eye peeled and get your hands on one -- for a grand, a great Fender P bass.

Gorgeous bass! I think the MIJs are levels above the MIA models. They just take craftsmanship more seriously over there.
I 100% agree!

I just finished a bit of a rant in another thread regarding this.

My '95 MIJ is the keeper of all my Jazzes. Current MIA routes are atrocious. Like a Squier without the CNC hole. Done with MIA for the foreseeable future. I have so many other options available at that price point that'll do a better job at delivering the goods.

I've been a Squier/Fender guy for a long time but this just particular issue just grates me. I wanted another Fender bass that I could play without the pickguard like my MIJ & I was under the impression that with MIAs I could do so.

I have 2 AP1 Fenders that I've never had the pickguard off of. Am I in for the same shock with those too?:jawdrop:

Nice. Congrats!

Probably not. The MIJ's still usually have pretty dark rosewood for their boards compared to the others.

Basses that have “consistently dark” rosewood are more likely to be stained than those that don’t - that’s precisely why stain is used.

There’s nothing wrong with a stained fretboard - it’s an aesthetic choice. I happen to like lighter rosewood, with some color variation in it. Neither choice is wrong or right- they’re just preferences.

Agreed! I also have basses with lighter rosewood boards. It really doesn't matter. I consider the MIJ's board to be a bonus. I would've bought it regardless.

I don't believe it's stained though. Really don't care if it is but you can tell if it has been stained like it was on a Gibbo Les Paul that I used to have. The MIJ's board doesn't look anything like the Lester's did.
