NBD-Yamaha Japan content...

Based on my experience with these basses (I have owned 4 of them over the years) I have to agree that if you leave a cable plugged into the bass, the battery is "on" and it will lose it's charge. Best practice is to unplug it when not in use.

Well, that's good enough evidence for me!

BTW. if you don't mind me asking - why did you buy and then get rid of this model so often? Was there something you didn't like about it?

Also, just got notice of an eBay sale for it 1980 Yamaha BB1200S electric bass vintage Japan active | eBay if you're into a reacquisition... ;)

Well the story goes like this. I bought a red one and loved it but continued to lust after one in "deep green". I found a green one and bought it, selling my red one before actually taking delivery of the green one. When the green one finally arrived it's finish was milky and messed up underneath, almost like there was mold growing under there or something. Very weird! Anyway I sold that one and found another rather beat one in red. Then after a while I located the one that I believe this thread was started about and it was in great shape. So I bought that one and sold the beat one.

I let my last one (this one) go in a moment of insanity because I had too many basses including a couple BB-2000's.

I will pay top dollar for a deep-green on if I can ever find one. Many of these have been played hard and look it. Like the one in the auction you referenced. If the price on that one was just a little lower I might have bought it and done a refinish but I'd lose the headstock logo and I don't want that to happen. Something to note is that the one in the auction has a matching drop-D tuner and I've never seen one of those that actually matched the other original tuners. That is very rare IMO.

So I'm still looking for either a trans-red or a deep-green BB-1200S in good to excellent shape. These are fantastic basses even though their active 3 band preamps are rather antiquated by today's standards. There is just something about the way these basses look, play and most of all, sound, that makes them as sought after as they are.

I will. Right now I intend to be buried with it.

Ha, I totally understand. :D

Theoretically this bass (1982 BB-2000 w/vintage active 3 band EQ installed by Yamaha in 1983) should sound and play the same, with the bridge pickup switched off, as a BB-1200S . For reasons I can't explain, it doesn't!

This is what I was told directly by a tech at Yamaha. Can't say from experience if its right or wrong.

Hunh. I drained the battery once or twice when I first got mine by forgetting and leaving it plugged in and in active mode (wasn't used to an active bass yet). I started making a point of switching to passive when I finished playing and the battery stopped dying, even though I often left it plugged in. Maybe the current drain is much lower in passive mode, or maybe I was just imagining it.

For those that wondered if they could be the previous owner of my bass the serial # is 130267

That would make it a 1984, the same as mine. It's in great condition, the best I've seen so far for one of these. Mine's in pretty good shape too (no hazing) but it's definitely been played a lot (which is a good sign, I guess); I won't ever replace it but I am keeping an eye out for a red one in better condition. I'd have snapped that one up if I'd run into it, so if you ever decide to sell yours I'd be interested. Until then, enjoy it, it's a beaut!
