Can you describe the differences between the two? I was looking at an EPI Pro-IV and figured I'd wind up replacing pickups.
I haven't tried the Pro-IV so I reserve the right to be overruled, but my experience with the Epiphone basses I have (the VP and the Goth) is that they are both a bit more mid focused than the Gibson Thunderbird. They have a little more grit and grind and the Gibson is a little more smooth and laid back.

IMHO - The best deal in any new bass out there right now is the Epiphone Thunderbird VP. It's an absolute monster capable of walking all over the rest of the band or just laying back in the mix. Check one out before you buy the Pro-IV, you might like it better. There's a sweet deal on a used one in the classifieds.
