I put on my TI Flats just now. Just for grins, I left the mod bar off. As @MoeTown1986 mentioned, the silk ends sit on the saddles without the length taken up by the bar. I thought I'd give it a try anyway as I wasn't going for max sustain with this bass and string combo.
I didn't A & B the TIs w/wo the bar, that adds wear and tear to the silks at the tuning end and crimped end with all that installing/uninstalling. (These strings have already been installed/uninstalled enough already.)
Anyway, they sound good to me w/o the bar (for now that is
)

When I was looking for a semi hollow, I was also considering the Gretsch 5440. A big orange Gretsch would look killer on stage! But after doing some research, it seemed that big Gretsch was prone to feedback, the stock pups were only so-so, and just wasn't Gretsch's best offering in their semi hollow body bass line.
Build-wise, I'm sure the quality on both is quite similar, I'll bet both are made in the same Samick factory overseas.
Couldn't find any negatives anywhere reported on the Jack Casady. Glad I bought it! Plus, I'm diggin the simplicity of single pickup basses right now.

what a deal/trade! it looks like it can 'handle' and that it's in great condition. your 'pair' looks great, but i'd be partial to the new/red one. congrats on your new instrument! 
I'm in the same boat. I have 3 five string jazzes with active preamps and fancy everyhing that I have been gigging with forever but have recently found a new love for my old simple passive P basses.
New Bass Day! Loving this "parts bass". Body is a Mosrite/Univox shape with Bill Lawrence p bass pickups, Hipshot bridge, Rotosound Billy Sheehan strings and maple Jazz bass neck. All electronics made in the US. Switchcraft Jack. CTS Pots. Very light and sounds killer!
