Whether or not the strings are loose the neck will likely move in one direction or the other due to the changes in climate during shipping. Fender mentions this in their guitar manuals. I expect needing a setup whenever I receive a shipped bass unless I get lucky.

Re the truss rod adjustment, I always loosen the strings before tightening the truss rod. Also you can put a little back pressure on the headstock while adjusting it so the truss rod isn't doing all the work. If you max it out before getting the neck to where you want it, you can add a washer or two to the truss rod to get more adjustment out of it. Finally, pay attention to string tension - if the neck continues to bow, it might need lighter strings.

Appreciate the pointers. I think I've got the neck where it should be. The strings that are on it are definitely heavier than the Med.-Lights I've been using.

I hear ya....it would suck to get a beautiful condition guitar and then have something like a non-functioning truss rod spoil things :^ /
OK...so I spent about an hour on this today cleaning it up real good and conditioning the fretboard, got some new GHS Boomers on it and did the final set up. Holy cow man, this bass is just stupid good. Really plays smooth and easy and has a killer tone and the low end is just really solid and powerful. I think it's going to be my favorite of the 3 cheapies I've got. Very, very happy and somewhat surprised.
Right on. I just picked one up too. Looking forward to new strings, adjusting everything and replacing the missing knob. Then seeing what it can do. Does anyone know what pickguards are direct replacements for these?
