I was glancing through Craigslist last week when I happened upon a Squier CV P bass in the next town for what I considered pre-pandemic pricing. I have never owned a Squier and my P needs have been satisfied by the two Fenders in my stable; a CIJ 51 reissue and a Mustang PJ. But with all the praise I had read on TB about CV P basses i thought it was worth a look. So on Christmas eve, I ran over and came back with a 2019 in olympic white with the requisite Tort PG for the reasonable price of $180. There is some damage on the bottom to the finish and the action was a mile high with a large bow in the neck but the truss rod works and I got the action down to a playable level. So why did I buy it? Well it is a great platform to hone my set-up and luthier skills. I am going to try my first fret leveling and crowning this week and change the roundwounds it came with for some flats. Eventual plans will be to swap out the neck for a fretless and if the white doesn't grow on me a possible refin. While I have read pro and con comments on the pick-ups I am in the camp that like them. They seem to have lots of tonal range and plenty of output. In the mean time I am enjoying the "new" guitar and can't wait to try it with the band next week.
