I'd been looking for a super cheap electric five string camping bass for a couple of years now. One that was very playable yet I'd feel fine with passing to anyone around a campfire jam with a bunch of acoustic guitars. I finally stumbled upon a Rogue LX205B in a pawn shop for $35. Its previous owner had apparently decided he did not like five strings and had removed the B string AND the tuner from the head stock. He'd also replaced E string tuner with a tuner meant for the other side of the head stock, so it was kind of backwards. The neck didn't seem so good, but I brought the remaining strings up to standard tuning and it felt much better. Other than that it was in really good shape. So, I picked it up for $30, got another complete used set of tuners off of Reverb for $10 and grabbed a used 130 B string of the pile and got it back to completely usable condition. Add a $25 canvas gig bag and I'm good to go for $65 all in. I also picked up an Alto Uber LT battery powered speaker for $50 to complete the package. For practice and low volume with unplugged acoustic guitars, this thing is a hidden gem. This is my first passive bass in a very long time, so I'm getting used to that. I keep thinking maybe I should upgrade the pickups, but then just have to remember what it is and what it's for.

I do really hate the Rogue label embedded in the finish. Maybe it'll be a theft deterrent!

I don't know about "quite powerful". It will keep up with a couple unplugged acoustic guitars just fine, but it's not going to shake any pant legs. I got it for an almost singular purpose, but will probably find other opportunities to use it. I'm just hoping the battery will last several hours.

Thanks! First up is a Dead and Company show at the Gorge in Washington. Four nights of camping and as I explained to me guitar playing friend, I've got a bass that I don't mind handing off to a dirty hippy with resin covered fingers for a song or two! I didn't have any other bass I could make that statement about.
