I've been in acquisition mode recently.
I started putting the parts together for this first bass about 3 months ago. It comprises a body from Spaltking of Canada, a Hipshot Kickass bridge which I picked up from BassCentral about a year or so ago and never used, a maple Jazz neck from @mikeddd, an improved stack-knob control plate from @Gord_oh, a second stack knob control plate with an integral series/parallel micro switch from 920D out of Arkansas, off of Reverb, and a set of Klein '62 pickups.
My original goal was to get that early 60's Jazz sound, without trying to fake-copy that body... I have enough '60's basses, and they're great.
As my technician/builder, Jeff in St. Pete, was lining the cavities with copper foil, and applying the tru-oil finish, I got a wild hair up my a$$ that I wanted a series/parallel switch but didn't want to compromise @Gord_oh's really nice work, so I told Jeff of my idea for interchangeable control plates and he said he could probably do that. His ultimate solution was to use Molex connectors (photos later) and it worked! 3 screws, plug-n-play, and I'm good to go.
So here it is:
The next instrument, I picked up from @kulit17, a very nice guy, and super-solid tb'er on his travels southward. Its a beautiful Sadowsky Will Lee Cocobolo built in March of '13, and still has the plastic on it. Best neck I've ever played, (But don't tell that to the '69 Jazz I've owned for 39 years. Let's just let that be our secret) you can see a ton of photos of it from kulit17 if you look up "Sadowsky Will Lee Cocobolo" here on tb.
And lastly, this arrived at my office this afternoon...a nearly new Devon 5 string:
I was going to commission Jeff to build one last instrument for me, but this Devon had all the features I'd envisioned and more. It just happened to pop up at the right time and it was a pleasure to deal with @campbems, another really righteous tb'er. Thanks to all.
I'm sure looking forward to playing my first 5 string and the spalted jazz as soon as I can find the time.
If anyone wants work done on guitars and basses in Pinellas county, be it simple set-ups, or more complex stuff, PM me for Jeff's contact info. He's meticulous and reasonable. But keep in mind, he has a full time job, so it ain't gonna be done by tomorrow .
