I saw bits and pieces. The implication was that the SEC is responsible for all of the expansion and the BCS because of that game.

That was nerve racking. After a long season, having to go against Florida in a conference championship seemed like the worst idea in the world at the time to me. We barely won that game by getting an interception returned for a touchdown. It was extremely nerve racking and Florida played us hard. Of course, everyone thought Miami would destroy us in the Sugar Bowl, but it was the opposite. People didn't believe in SEC defenses then either, but we made the Hurricanes look like a highschool team. Florida would have beaten them too.
The week of the SECCG in Atlanta, the SEC hosts this "Fan Fare" event where you can walk around and interact with various football exhibits, buy beer, and check out other sponsors.
They have these really cool interview sessions where two former players from each team sit in front of the crowd and answer questions. In one of the sessions we caught, there was Antonio Langham alongside Shaun Alexander. I forgot who the Gators were, I think Wil White was one of them. When it was opened to the audience to ask questions, all anyone wanted to talk about was that game in '92. A few people were asking him to re-enact the INT, but no one could find Monty Duncan (I think it was him). Shane Matthews was there, but he had already done the interview segment and was signing autographs in another booth.

For those who don't recognize him, the guy with the houndstooth hat is Harvey Updyke, the Alabama fan who poisoned the iconic oak trees at Toomer's Corner in Auburn. Alabama fans were posing with him and asking for autographs.

Yup, my sister used to live in Semmes, just outside of Mobile. I grew up in Slidell, LA, so I spent a LOT of time in "L-A" over the years. Both my niece and nephew grew up there, and are great young adults.
I like most folks I meet from AL, but THAT douchebag and anyone that would want his autograph are trash, no matter WHERE you're from.
Just saw a documentary on the Auburn/Alabama rivalry, in which he featured heavily.
Great program, but damn, some people don't know how to separate this stuff from their lives, or seemingly don't have much of one outside watching college kids play a game.

I live in Semmes! Scenic Hills, near Howell's Ferry Road and Snow road, if you know where that is.
I'm not saying all Alabama fans are like him. I count among my friends some fine, upstanding Alabama fans who are great sports and I watch the Alabama-Auburn game with them.
But if you believe it's a small minority that would like their picture taken with Updyke, to get his autograph, or shout Roll Tide when his name is mentioned, I think you are mistaken. Realistically, I'd put the number at 40-50%. The guys family has a website and is selling T-shirts to defer his legal bills, and, apparently to buy his ticket to the championship game.
Harvey Updyke is, like it or not, a huge figure in Alabama Crimson Tide history, and always will be. It makes me sad for my friends who are Alabama fans and good sports. But there are plenty like the guys in the picture that are working hard to make it so, and damn proud of him.
Cool! My sister moved to Panama City Beach, FL a couple years ago, and I've lost touch with the area, but I kinda liked the Mobile area. Sad to hear there are that many 'Bama fans of that ilk. I can tell you from living in BRLA for a few years (close enough to hear the crowd at Death Valley and see the lights on game nights), MOST of the LSU fans are very cool, open people that just want to have a good time - but there is an element that are just as unsavory as that element of the 'Bama fanhood....
Sadly, that element exists to some extent in every sport.

This game, I just don't know. Anything could happen. I hope it's great, and I think it will be. Probably comes down to one play. Maybe McCarron gets careless with the ball when forced to pass, maybe the Honey Badger makes a huge play, maybe Richardson does, maybe The Hat makes a gamble that goes wrong. I'm picking Bama, but it's like a 51/49 vote in my head.
I agree that will probably be the crux of the biscuit...however, I don't expect a FG fest (although it is definitely to the LSU advantage if it IS!
), I feel there will be some points on the board by the end of the night....when the crystal football begins its trip 75 miles or so west to its new home.
I hope the SEC gang has fun watching the Natty, there's a Bedlam game on. At least this year an SEC team will lose the national championship game

I live in Alabama and have a degree form UA. I don't know one person who approves of the tree poisoning or thinks that guy is anything but an idiot. Your 40-50 percent number is nuts and exposes you as the hater/trouble maker. Every team has a few idiot fans, btw.
