NCAA Football - 2011

OK, SEC guys. Now that UK is out of March Madness, how many if you are pulling for Butler to win? I am, just to prove that the whole playoff thing is a farce. Butler is NOT the best team in NCAABB.

Go post about this in the March Madness thread n00b. :D

I hope UConn wins by the way. Although the dude on Butler that looks like Hot Rod is good.

-Mike

But UConn is if they win? It rarely is the "best" team that wins it.
No, but Butler being the national champ is laughable, and would go very far to dismantling the idea that simply having a playoff system means we get a legitimate champion. I know this is the football thread, so I'm only posting this here in contrast to that. The NCAAB regular season is a joke, as is the bid process that picks the teams. The Tournament has become an event in and of itself (which is cool) because of the brackets and picking teams, etc. But in terms of determining the champion, it's WAY off from NCAAF IMHO. If the regular season mattered, then Ohio State would have been playing someone else for the championship. They were clearly better than anyone else all year, and just slipped up against Kentucky in a high pressure tournament.

Nah...I don't want to get involved. When I lived up north in college, I lived for March. We'd skip class and watch the tournament all day. It was great. Now I could care less for the most part. Butler has a very good team. It's not easy to navigate the tournament regardless of where a team is seeded. I personally wish they'd pick less teams for the tournament, and use a double elimination system. Basketball is just one of those games where it's easy to lose any game. When it comes to choosing a true champion, I think Baseball (also a regular season bore) is probalby the only major sport that gets it right. Hard to argue that the World Series champ isn't the best team in the country. The World Cup also has a good system, though it's always peppered with poor officiating.

Shelvin Mack?

I disagree. It's much easier to achieve parity in college hoops, where the required number of talented players to win a title is far smaller and the costs are much lower, than in college football. Also, the field of 68 lets in a lot of marginal teams that can make a run, and is much bigger than the field would be in any proposed football playoff system. I think a field of 8 in college football would be fantastic.

I agree with what you are saying above, so I'm not sure why you disagree with me? :D

I just don't think Butler has been the kind of team that Ohio State was all year. I like the tournament simply because it's a big tournament, but I hate what it does to the regular season for NCAAB.

I wouldn't mind an 8 team NCAAF playoff at all because I don't think it would destroy the regular season. Most big basketball fans like to tout the sport being superior for selecting a champion, but I just disagree with that because most years the team that wins it all in the end is not who anybody thought was the best all year long. They just manage to bring it all together during a few week period. Butler and VCU are great examples of this. Fine teams, but not national champs I don't think.

If you guys stand up on your tippy toes and squint really hard, you can see the college football season coming. No lockouts!!! Wahoo!

Haha, that's pretty sad. "Hey, we finally beat you guys!" The very opposite of "act like you've been there before".:D

I'm not sure why you were weighing in against playoffs then?:D I could be wrong, but I don't think anyone's calling for a 64- or 32-team field for college football playoffs.

I get to go to the Vandy spring game and to a tailgate party on Sunday, completely free of charge. I'm typically against such activities, but it's really hard to argue with free food, beer, and football. I'll just be a semi-drunk spy.

LOL. That is kind of funny. $850 to irritate a bunch of folks trying to enjoy their spring game. Look up, see a reminder of FSU beating you. Look down and see....

Poor wording on my part really. Not weighing in against playoffs necessarily, but against the notion that the NCAAB playoff system is somehow better than what the NCAAF has in place currently. An 8 game playoff would definitely enhance what we have already I think.
