This hasn't seemed to hit the news yet, but about an hour ago, Harvey Updyke, the man who poisoned the Auburn trees, was attacked as he was getting out of his car at a gas in Opelika, AL, which is about 30 minutes from Auburn. He doesn't know who or how, but was blindsided as he was getting out of his car, knocked unconscious, awaking on the ground sometime later. He was taken to a local hospital. He had a lasceration on his brow that required stitching, along with other facial bruises, indicating there was more than one blow. There's a rumor stating that he was also stabbed, but I can't verify that yet. I know that he refused treatment eventually and left the hospital.
I was lamblasted weeks back for stating there would be retribution for what Updyke did. I was also belittled for stating that Updyke's actions were likely part of a retaliation effort from what some idiotic Auburn fans had done in and around Tuscaloosa following the Iron Bowl and their subsequent MNC. I was surprised to hear a few people think anything I was saying on this was so odd. Actions have consequences, right or wrong, and now Updyke is lucky to still have his life. Fortunately, most Alabama fans could give two squirts of used beer for Updyke (even though one person seemed to think we all secretly admired him), so I don't think this will bring any retaliation at all. HOPEFULLY, even the angriest of Auburn fans who are otherwise normal people away from this issue will view this is payback, and we'll all move on. I've been waiting to hear that the new Saban statue was destroyed, but with the 24x7 guards posted there, it might be a while before that happens. Thankfully Updyke wasn't killed, which would have been an even worse tragedy, but in a flawed society, perhaps this was a best case scenario if it winds up halting the hostilities that exist over this one issue. I don't condone vigilanty justice at all, but the man had to be stupid to continue living in the Auburn area after doing something so dumb.
