NCD - Hartke HyDrives

I've been looking at these & other 112 cabs including the new Genzler Array 112 cabs (which are SO pricey). It sounds like a pair will do pretty well based on your comments. Do you know if they are plywood or MDF? I'm pretty sure that based on the price, they are not made here. Do you know where they are made?

I have nothing but praise for the HyDrive line. I've rocked my 4-10 for a good couple of years and have never been let down. Has sounded great with my earlier rack system and truly helps my Fender 100t tube head shine, tweeter disengaged of course:cool:.

Yes, I do prefer the blackened grill.

Do the half paper/half aluminium cones here make any discernible difference between these and the full aluminum cones?

BTW, I have a used Hartke 4200 Pro cab at my rehearsal space, it's a beast and sounds great. I think the pro was before HyDrive became the flagship line?

Not sure if different. I never played the all-aluminum to be honest. I like what I hear though. Horn off and Precision and tube head involved, sounds like a fine damn cab that transmits what it is given. I don't want to use the word ' transparent' because I personally hate that term relating to bass. The hyDrive also does gooey passive P tones just fine!

I love Harktes so I keep coming back to this thread....

Anyway, I just now noticed that the speaker is oft-centered instead of in the middle like most single speaker cabs. Can anyone explain the reason why ? I'm curious as to the legit reason.

I believe it's to accommodate the tweeter in the upper left corner & the port in the lower left corner.

Yes, the tones are different. A lot warmer than the all aluminum drivers, but they still have that bite that you'd expect.

I prefer the Hydrive 115 cab over the XL all aluminum series, it's much warmer, but I'm using a 210XL with it because I like the crispness of the aluminum.

Per the label on the back of my 112s they are designed & engineered in the USA & built in China (same with my much larger Phil Jones rig), and per the website, solid plywood cabinets.
Specs here...

Thinking about it, tfer nailed it as far as what I hear. Warm yet defined. As an aside, I did use the HyDrive 410 with an American Spector bolt-on. The cab faithfully put out what it was given. A great chameleon it is. It has stayed with me as my tonal goals have shifted. That's a compliment in my books.

The horn plays a big role in my opinion. Horn engaged for that 'fast and zingy' with an active bass and right head will give you what you're looking for. Horn off, combined with my Precision and Fender tube 100t works well for me. The point is that these cabs are extremely versatile. The Hydrive 410 is 1000 watts. That said, I would love to have two of those 15 cabs (grill sprayed black of course).

As other's have posted here, they are plywood, but made outside the US. I know that Larry takes great care in the QC that happens outside, and he also insists on his designs being built with plywood. Mine are top notch build, and I have been beating on the 1X12 pretty hard (I had one of the first to come out of the factory.)

I've done about 100 shows I bet with 2 Hydrive 112's, with either an LH500 or HA3500 head. Just dont over do the Low frequencies on the EQ (I pull out the 30Hz fader all the way on the 3500) and these cabs can get plenty loud. I was very close to getting 2 more to run 4 112's off of an LH1000, but I came across an 810 Hydrive for cheap. The HX810 / LH1000 maiden voyage will be this Friday night! I'd still consider trading the 810 for a pair of 112's though..maybe.
The 112's are deeper sounding than the 10's but in a live setting you dont really need to much low end, as it seems to muddy thing up. I expect the 810 will cut thru like a hot knife thru butter, and blow my guitar players right off the stage!
