NE-1 Parametric EQ, Still Using it?

The "flat" setting supposedly provides no eq. There is no footswitch.

The moment of truth is at hand as this thing is supposed to arrive today. So either I'll be a happy camper or a sore loser tomorrow, depending ono how much I like the tones I get. Fingers crossed.

What a blast from the past!

I bought mine about 5 years ago, and used it fairly regularly for about 2 years.

It is a nice little unit; it doesn't do a lot, but what it does, it does well. Whether on deep or shallow, I never set it below 7.
Below that it sounded too muffled to me.

Now, I use my Boss ME-50B most of the time. This thing has some nice tones, but like any effect I feel you have to tweak it for a while to discover what it can really give you.

Sometimes it's nice to run straight into the amp for an uncolored sound.

FWIW:

no on-off in my recall, just by-pass. To my knowledge you have to unplug it to keep from draining the battery anyway and that shuts it off - just like an active bass.

That was one thing that was great about the NE-1, the battery lasted forever. Got it with a used battery and sold it with the same battery months later. At first I was miffed cause no option for an adapter. Doesn't need one. My Sadowsky lasted about 9 hours or so - good thing Boss adapter worked with it fine.

Cristo, may I suggest trying it on the shallow setting, then gradually add bass on your amp. Begin with the NE-1 at 5, and slowly turn it towards 10. At about 7 you'll hear the sound open up. (treble) At least that's how it sounds to me. Let us know what you think.

I also think that the NE-1 sounds better with passive basses.

OK, so I've fiddled around with this for a while. It does provide many different tones.

The only spot that I found to be useful sounding wiht my setup at the moment is Shallow 3, which is a cut centered at 2kHz. This is the same as the infamous Deep 4 setting, just not as much of a cut. Deep sounds too muffled on my gear, but maybe with additional twiddling it might work.

Shallow 3 seems to eliminate some of the clanky, twangy, finger squeaky noise I usually get. I play fingerstyle and use my nails, so I get more clank in the attack than someone who does not. At this setting I can kill some of the annoying part of the clank but still get some attack with my nails that I like.

It is also a killer slap tone, to my ear, so I've suddenly been busting out the thumb after years of neglect. I forgot how much fun that is.

At the moment this sounds good to me because that 2kHz frequency has been bothering me lately. (in the future I will probably think it sounds great!)

Unfortunately I am without band at the moment, so I have no idea how it will sound with drums and guitar blaring. I'm worried that this cut might diminish the clarity of the bass, but I don't know at this point.

I think I might be most satisifed with a true parametric, which would enable me to more precisely control things. But it adds additional complexity and I'm not sure if I want another 10 knobs to worry over.
